At Redline headquarters, we have a wall solely dedicated to framed stars ‘n striped jersies; right next to the rainbow striped jersies of our BMX World Champions. Y’see; in every cycling discipline (whether it is mountain bike, road bike, velodrome or cyclo-cross), USA Cycling holds a “U.S. Championships.” Much like all European and Australian associations do, it’s a one-shot, one-day-only National No.1 title. And in all of those forms of cycling, winning and wearing the stars ‘n stripes of a U.S. National Champion is the ultimate. It’s like being crowned ABA National No.1 (only without the 10 wins and 11 months of consistency).
For the past decade, Redline riders have won their share of the red, white and blue jerseys – in the mud ‘n crud sport of cyclo-cross. In fact, Logan Owen – our young BMX star–turned-Cyclocross racer, has already won two Stars ‘n Stripes. Other BMXers who know the prestige of the patriotic jersey are Brian Lopes, Eric Carter, Mike King and Jill Kitner. They have all fought hard for, and won this jersey, in the suspension-realm of mountain bikes. To Carter and King, who are both No.1 title holders in the ABA, donning the stars ‘n stripes is probably as meaningful as holding an ABA No.1 Silver Cup above their head in Oklahoma.
I started keeping a daily journal way back in 1987 when I was only 15 years old. I started back when I was a freshman in high school. Since then, every single freakin’ day of my life has been documented in these journals. If it happened, it’s in there. And believe me; I’ve got some stories to tell. November 4th, 1993 Actual Journal Entry: “I borrowed Cara’s car & drove to Airwalk in San Diego. I met up with BMX Team Manager, Kim Boyle & got some shoes & went to lunch with him.
– Rockford, Illinois – Once again, the ABA steamed its way into Illinois for the annual Mid-West Nationals at the legendary Rockford BMX facility just outside of Chicago. With its long first straight and infamous first turn, the stage was set for another classic battle at the “Rock”. When you look at the SE racing bike on your right you notice that the bike has no brakes, brakeless you say? No, not really. There was a time when coaster brakes were the way to go. Agreed, it's a long time ago but everyone had a coaster brake. It basically worked all the time for the skids that were done. Coaster brakes made a comeback when freestyle was introduced. Perfect for those flat bank kick turns and no backpedaling required when rolling back. Ahh, the good old days......

Actual Journal Entry “ABA Fall Nationals –Burbank CA AA Pro motos 4-4-3 I didn’t make the main. I flipped the pro jump in my 1st & 3rd motos. EVERYONE went crazy. I got balled up in the semi & didn’t qualify to the main.
We're not done yet with the old school bikes. People don't realize most of the time that inventions now, were actually things of the past. Fly Bikes' drilled rims were done by Mongoose ages ago. Cook Bros had cantilever brakes and a stem similar to the A-headset system that is being used right now, a long time ago. From the bike in the picture it looks like they even were way ahead of GT's first freestyle frame. Anyway, look at the photos and discover things that you have on your bike today. Forget about that buddy seat though.
Dylan Clayton and friends are holding a race/event at the venue of the sixth round of the UK national championships which is Dylan's local track where he helps out. There is also a uci points race on the Sunday too. There will be a link on the FIRMBIKES site in a couple of days with hotels, map etc. We have some good sponsors as you can see so the prize money is good, hopefully about 6/7 hundred for first paying to 8th. The track has been rebuilt and is riding really good.
There's old school, and there's old school. These bikes are definitely from the old school. Mike de Wit visited the 30 years SE/DC exhibition and shot some more photos for us to enjoy. Take this Redline for instance. Kids wanted to be like motocross riders and wanted their bike to look the same. Buddy seat, crossbar, high fender, shocks, the works.
