The death toll from the disaster that hit Japan has now passed 10,000. It’s reported that 17,000+ people are still missing and more than 240,000 people are still in evacuation shelters. With damages to the road networks and transport infrastructure, movement around the country is still severely restricted. Most survivors still don’t have access to heating or warm clothing as temperatures drop to freezing at night. Stores have been unable to stock enough food and bottled water to keep up with people’s needs. Hospitals have even reported running out of medicine and supplies, and sick and injured survivors are struggling to find treatment.
