Ricardo Laguna sent us some photos of his Extreme Thing Ricardo Laguna Pro BMX Dirt Challenge event that went on in Las Vegas recently. The rider line-up was incredible and so was the wind. Each year in South Africa the Gatecrash tour is held where loads of riders get together and go on a week long road trip. To start it all off the first weekend of the tour was The Riot Jam Am contest. The Riot Store is South Africa's one of only 2 stores in South Africa whose stock is comprised solely of BMX products. Brian Kachinsky was booked to come over for the tour but unfortunately had some trouble with his knee preventing him from riding.

Riot Store employee of the month Devin Toselli went down like a homesick mole on the very first jump of the whole jam. He won a night in hospital and no doubt got to wear one of those creepy gowns. Get better soon Devin.

The comp comprised of 2 days: day 1 was dirt at Giba Gorge and day 2 was park at Hux skatepark. At the end scores from both days were combined to decide the winner. Many local pro's were present and rode but the whole Riot Jam was about giving the Am's a chance to do their thing.

Going out to ride or going to a contest isn't as easy as it was 15 years ago now that I have a family and two kids it just makes it harder to get things organized. With the wife in France on a school trip, daughter Veerle at her Grandparents it was time for Philip and I to head down to Cologne for the Rookie Jam. Nephew Timo climbed on board too so this was going to be our family trip for the day. You see, the Rookie jam is an event for the kids, the old dogs and everything in between who don't really have the contest experience yet. For most riders in the Rookie class it was their first event. Same for Philip. Philip is 4 years old and has been riding that Z12 for a while. When I showed him a movie of the park he said he wanted to enter the contest. It's nice when they say that at home but being in the actual hall with 130 other riders can be a bit intimidating. But Philip and I started making laps from the bank, over the jump, and back to the bank. I was getting tired of all the riding but Philip wasn't. He was like the energizer bunny and kept going, and going, and going......

Putting on jams is a great thing. Manuel Bernardo held a flatland jam last weekend in Wuppertal, Germany. He had to change plans when the weather forecast said it would rain but riders found the covered spot okay and rode together all day long. And that's what jams are about. Just riding, no pressure, no entry fees and at the end of the day you probably learned a new trick.
Manuel fired over some photographs of the jam and is already working on next year's Wuppertal Flatland session. 

Actual Journal Entry: I met up with Dave Mirra in the morn & Mike Griffin and I used his rental car & drove 40 minutes from Newport, Rhode Island to Providence. That’s where the dirt jump contest is. We checked into our dorms & put our stuff in there & drove back to Newport & watched street qualifiers. There were crazy crowds here! Then we hooked up with Robbie Morales & drove back to Providence.
