This past weekend in Santa Cruz , CA 2-Hip bikes held the premiere of their new video titled "Under the radar". The Rio theater in downtown Santa Cruz was rented out and filled up with kids bikes fans. Unfortunately 2-Hip owner and flashy dresser Ron Wilkerson could not be present for the premiere since he was booked into a local hospital. He is on the mend and I heard even tried to make a valiant attempt to escape the hospital to attend. Editor/Rider/Filmer Jarrod Allen introduced the video and called Wilkerson from the stage putting the microphone to his cell phone so that we could all hear him.
The video itself reflected the unique approach the company has towards bmx sometimes being a bit off the wall.
Eastpak is one of the sponsors of this year's Rebel Jam in Berlin. They've made up some limited edition bags that you can win on FATBMX. Just answer the following questions and send your answers in before 1 August 2006. Don't forget to leave your contact details with the contest entry so if you win the prize, Eastpak can send the limited edition bag to you.
1) When does the Rebel Jam take place? 2) What city in Germany will host the Rebel Jam? 3) Why do you need the Rebel Jam bag?
Staats Bicycles teamed up with Sponsor House sponsorhouse.com to award the Grand Prize Winner of the Sponsor House survey; a complete Staats jumper bike, which retails for $650.Nicole took the time to fill out the 60 question survey that focuses not only on demographic and psychographic rider background, but also on how athletes interact with the Sponsor House site as well as other web sites. Sponsor House uses this information to determine what new features to offer to improve the next version of SponsorHouse, which will be launched this July. “Staats is excited to work with Sponsor House to award our jumper bike as the Grand Prize to a cool athlete like Nicole. Nicole was very thankful and excited when she found out she won,” offered Staats’ Jason Halverson.
Nicole is now using her new Staats jumper bike to dial in her 2 wheel bike skills so she is more confident when she is bar-banging on the mini bike race track. “I had a great time on the bike! I love the brakes and the top speed! This is going to be a new sport for me to try (as opposed to the board and motor sports!) Thanks,” quoted Nicole after her first day on her bike.
This Snickers Bowl report is fashionably late. But what is late? It's Monday after the contest as I'm typing this up. Spending 5 hours at the London Heathrow airport has its advantages. Good thing I brought the laptop. The photos are already prepared in the right size and all I need is a little text now of what happened and some internet connection. The latter will only be available when I'm back home so please bear with me for a few hours. How cool would it be if there was free wireless worldwide. Updates could come from anywhere that way as long as there's a power socket nearby and I've got the right plug. The hotel actually had internet but after the competition it was time for some Guns 'n Roses and then the hotel bar/lobby for hours of DMC tales straight from the horses mouth. Classic stories, I tell you.
But the reason we were in Donington was the Snickers Bowl contest. It was an invite only competition for BMX and skateboarding and the Bowl was set up in the middle of the Download festival that had bands playing all day long. Thousands of people showed up and I mean THOUSANDS.
Today the annual manual and prelims took place at the Download Festival in Donnington. We'll give you the results here before we hop back in the bus to go see Metallica live. Jealous yet? The Annual Manual once again went to Ruben Alcantara. Last year he won $ 1200,= USD for it and I've heard this year it's more. You guys now start practicing your wheelies. It's a rewarding trick. A split 8th place in prelims has Tom Stober and Dennis McCoy both making the finals making it a group of 9 tomorrow. First place in qualifying went to Simon Tabron who had the tricks and the height. Jimmy Walker is ruling the bowl and got 2nd with Joe Rich getting third. I'm doing this out of the top of my head and it's either Bas Keep or Koji Kraft in 4th or 5th. Anyway, they both made it. Zach Shaw and Matt Fairbairn fill the next two places and together with Tom and DMC that will be the final of tomorrow.
FATBMX is at the Download festival in Donington, England. Today was the "local" version of the BMX and skate competition. Basically, the UK version had riders that rode to make it to the event on Sunday with all the big wigs. Only the winner went through and that was Chris Mahoney. He'll have to stay for the weekend but knowing Chris he doesn't have a problem hanging out with 100.000 hardrockers and the better skateboarders and BMX-ers. Bikes, Beers and Bitches is another way to describe the situation here. Black shirts galore and all out for a good time. Mike Mullen won the high air contest that was held after the comp was over. The dude still has it and he went pretty high. It was wild guessing how high exactly he went but the judges declared him the winner. Tool played on stage while Vans man Steve van Doren was flipping burgers for the BMX-ers and skateboarders. At the same time the pro practice session was going on. Jimmy Walker was looking really good. It's hard to tell what his regular way is and what his opposite side is.
If ya haven't heard, some of the SE riders have gotten broke off recently.
First, Fernando Sabat went down at the Real Ride contest the other week and broke & dislocated his elbow. Check the pic. Nasty! Then Travis Postany just broke his leg at the CFB contest in Oklahoma. Let's wish these guys a speedy recovery so they can be loftin' it again soon.
