For the second year in a row Josh Harrington won one of the biggest contests on earth; the Metro Jam. With over 90 pros entering the contest it's hard to make the finals. Winning the Toronto Metro stop two years in a row has never been done before so Josh must be stoked. Dave Mirra decided to stop by for the first time and got second, living up to his reputation of finishing high at major contests. San Diego's Gary Young placed third.
2006 Toronto Metro Jam final pro street results:
1 Josh Harrington 94.0 2 Dave Mirra 93.4 3 Gary Young 91.6 *Gary Wins Tie Break 4 Morgan Wade 91.6 5 Garrett Reynolds 90.6 6 Brian Hunt 90.2 7 Chris Doyle 89.8
The little one woke up at 6am on Sunday morning. It didn't really matter as I needed to get up anyway. The Open Dutch MX championships were on the program for the day and I planned on leaving at 9am. Right then it started to snow. Hard! I decided to enjoy the warm living room for a bit longer before I got in the car to drive to Gemert. It got real white within 15 minutes and I checked the internet to see if there were any posts up on the event. I coulnd't find anything so it was off to the track. 15 minutes later I arrived and the sun was out. Nice. It was cold but I was prepared and wore a lot of clothes. I checked in with the Universal MX riders (Jarno Verhorevoort and new rider Johan Carlsson from Sweden) before I made it to the track to shoot some pics in practice. The racing in both MX1 and MX2 classes was intense and here's the little report I wrote for Monday's Kickstart.
I just found out I was too late to get it posted so here goes:
The world is full of surprises. Brad McDonald is leaving Transworld Media. After starting Ride magazine from his bedroom in the early 90-s McDonald had worked his way to the top at Transworld media as their Group Publisher. He also had a hand in starting SNAP, BMX Business News, Transworld Motocross and their latest addition, TW Quad. Now what's McDonald going to do?
"It is with both sadness and excitement that I announce my departure from TransWorld. I am returning to my entrepreneurial roots and am launching a new venture, which will be an online media company." stated McDonald, he continues:
We Dutchies like speed skating, simply because we're good at it. We conquered several (gold) medals at the recent winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. If you take a good look at the speed skaters, you must have noticed the number of Oakley Pro M-frame glasses on the athletes. Well, it's the work of Steve Blick, who next to anything on 2 wheels that has no motor on it, was stuck dealing with the damn speed skaters. All joking aside, Steve has strong NorCal BMX roots that go back to riding with Maurice Meyer and Dave
On Cali trips I usually trip to stop by Hidden Valley in Huntington Beach. I've ran into miniature razor riders there, mountain bikers, BMX-ers and plowed trails. This time I parked the car behind the grocery store on Beach Blvd. and made the walk down only to find one rider who was filming himself with a helmet camera. After checking the current trail situation and snapping a few shots, I drove off to Sheep Hills to see if Thursday afternoon was more popular there. Consider that a negative so I headed back to Beach and Adams to check it out one more time. I had more luck this time.
Around 10 riders were making it through the pack. I stayed low profile and snapped away. POW Jay Lonargan was there too and so was Sean (who did recognize me and said he was a FATBMX regular so this one's for you Sean! good to see you again). Ben Snowden had a posse there including SeanLogan, his girlfriend and some photographer. Some other guy was filming so you get the idea, Hidden Valley is still happening.
-Michael Sommer won his first flatland contest of the year. FLY Racing re-signs Pacific Cycle> In other FLY Racing news, we have re-signed a deal with Pacific Cycle for 2006. Who is Pacific Cycle? That would be GT and Mongoose Bicycles. Look for one of the most consistent and professional racers ever, GT's Randy Stumpfhauser to continue wearing FLY for 06. Randy's teammate Joey Bradford will be wearing FLY at the track and on the mountain as he continues to tear it up in BMX and 4X Mountain Biking. We are excited with the addition of the legend Eric "Big Daddy" Rupe as he will make his FLY debut coming up in couple weeks at the ABA's Great NW National in Pasco WA. The Big Daddy is also leading the race for the ABA 06 Vet Pro title. The GT and Mongoose Mtb team's will also be in FLY for 06. A member of that Mongoose team is Eric Carter. For those of you who remember, EC was a top AA pro back in the day and now can be found on top of the podium at most mountain bike events.
