After re-signing with REDLINE for the next 2-years, KIM HAYASHI is hot after her record-making 5th NBL No.1 title. With her focus on that accomplishment, as well as training hard to qualify for one of the 2 spots on the USA’s Olympic BMX Team, with ASU college classes and graduation thrown in between it all, Kim is definitely one busy girl. With the latest NBL point standings showing her with a 12 point lead over Canada’s Sammy Cools, we had a chance to speak with Lil’ Kim and get her take on the first quarter of her ‘07 BMX season.
ARIZONA [PHOENIX]: The ABA Winternationals was your first ABA race of the year. How’d it go for you?
The 2007 NBL Elite Series is heading towards an exciting finish and you just might see a few new names on the podium this year. Free Agent’s Cristian Becerine leads the Elite Men’s chase but 2006 Champion, Donny Robinson (Formula), has been quietly working his back to the top. Redline’s Kim Hayashi is holding on to the lead in Elite Women but Supercross’s Samantha Cools and Krystal Hime are closing in fast. Here’s a snapshot of the current standings:
More than 5.000 people enjoy Spain’s first World Cup in this discipline. Australian Khalen Young claims victory against the world’s best riders in a very tough final. Extreme sport is getting more and more important in Spain, and a big example is that 5.000 people have enjoyed the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Madrid. Although BMX is not a very known sport (yet), the Juan Carlos I Auditorium was crowded with fans cheering every jump.
Along with sponsoring the entire Dutch National Team and putting on the Redline Cup Series in the Benelux countries, REDLINE, along with Batavus [Redline’s distributor in the Benelux countries] has also just signed on as an official sponsor of the Dutch site BMX-videos.com. Founded in 2003 as the official website for Dutch factory team schijfbmx.nl, BMXvideos.com has grown in to the first choice for International BMX race coverage. In 2007, they will cover every round of the European Championship series, the UCi World Champs in Victoria, BC, as well as every national race in the Netherlands.
The first day of BMX racing at the Sea Otter classic was washed out. A few drops started to come down as I headed towards the track and by the time I got there it was a steady downpour. My friends over in the Fringe Gear tent were kind enough to give myself and my camera shelter. Then it really started coming down with the help of the wind and flooded half the tent. Before it turned into Waterworld 2, I spoke to a few of the racers and had a look at the track. The layout was very simple with no large jumps and slick soil. Basically some built up berms and a few rollers.
Where we faced super good weather conditions in Holland, the UCI BMX SX race in Madrid, Spain was almost cancelled because of the rain. In the end it did happen and here is how the Saturday Elite Men results look: 1 Khalen Young 2 Robert de Wilde 3 Cristian Becerine 4 Donny Robinson 5 Damien Godet 6 Mike Day 7 Derek Betcher 8 Roger Rinderknecht

There's a good reason why you haven't seen REDLINE's SHANAZE READE at a BMX track for the past month. Her and fellow British Cycling teammates had been putting in some "track" time of another kind. At the Track Cycling World Championships being held in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, Shanaze was paired up with Victoria Pendleton to compete in the Womens Team Sprint. TRACK, you say? It's not what you think--this one has no dirt or jumps, but does feature high banked berms.
