Saturday, and then the finals on Sunday, but not here. Practice didn't start until 3 in the afternoon on the Friday and the comp took place right after that. It was a tight schedule but worked out fine in the end. Watching the event was like watching a skateboard street comp. At times there were 8 riders on the course at the same time. How you can follow the action of all those riders at the same time is beyond me. You're bound to miss some of the tricks that the riders are doing and this time the 3 judges had to keep in mind that there were two riders that got one score together.
But the comp was more about the riding than an official title at the end of the night. And the riding was bonkers. The riders that got picked/invited for this event were all top street dawgs and it didn't really matter who you got teamed up with because everyone on the list was great. Some good thoughts went into the building and painting of the obstacles. The hearse with disco lights and smoke machine did its job during the comp. The coffin out the back, the platform on the roof and the attached rails up front were used well. Tony Hamlin nose wheelied the whole roof of this long as car which was sick. The Reaper rail was rad and it was good to see that Soto and Vander are not forgotten as their names appeared on the course as well. On tombstones I believe.
The crowd arrived before the finals started. It was a unique event for New York to have all these guys in one place at the same time. The Felt Bikes duo of Scotty Cranmer and Augie Simoncini ended up winning the Red Bull Trick Or Treat comp. Some Dew Tour style tricks were thrown in by Scotty to help bump up the score for the judging panel that at this point consisted of only 4 eyes. Bruno Hoffmann grabbed the cool Best Trick tombstone Award for doing a 540 off the roof of the hearse to fakie. Not bad for the 17 years old Germany who had flown in just for the weekend.
In the end everyone was a winner. To be able to ride with your friends in NYC is a unique opportunity. The crowd got to see some awesome street riding and Red Bull scored some coverage and credit from everyone present for putting together a great comp that only took up an afternoon and evening out of everyone's busy schedule.
