and then off the box into a landing which had a 7 meter gap as well. Not everyone could whistle through this section, let alone together with 7 other riders. This section cause for some great entertainment when riders failed to clear the gaps and landed on the UCI Air mattrasses. When is the last time you saw those at a BMX race? Yes, maybe at Helltrack. A Supercross BMX track is no joke. When you ride trails you kinda have an idea on where to build the landing. The first jump in Madrid was 11.3 meters followed by a 12 meter long triple jump. Pretty nuts and respect to the racers who jumped it, including the girls.
The atmosphere was great. When going for a bite to eat before the race I noticed the square full of people. They were all there waiting to get inside. 4000 in total showed up and they indeed got to see a good program. There was plenty of entertainment in between the racing which included 2 dirt demos which was a bit of a contest in itself too I guess. Naran, his buddy, the Lacondeguy brothers and Sergio Layos made it work. First show was so-so but during the second part they went off and showed turndown flips, double whips and fronties (Naran) and 360 turndowns on the first set to 3-whips and downside 360-s on the last set (Sergio). Always good to get some BMX entertainment in there although the crowd ate up the Trials demo too.
The advantage of having a race inside a big arena are the facilities it comes with. Big screens in every corner, plenty of seats with a good view, good sound, space for the teams to do their thing, etc. It must cost an arm and a leg to rent a place like this but if a big enough crowd shows up it takes away from setting up bleachers, a sound system and renting one track with a big screen.
On to the races. After the time trials qualification round 64 fastest riders lined up for the race in the men class and 32 of the fastest women made it to the evening program. Some big names missed the cut but that’s life. You’ve probably seen the Live report on FATBMX.com via Freecaster.tv already, or you can even check the replays that are online now. That way you can see who turned how on what corner or passed the other rider by their skills. Plenty of “thrills ‘n spills” too. In the end it was Australian Sam Willoughby who won the men’s class with a strong race and Laetitia le Corguille (France) won the girls class. A big start of the season for them.
