Last weekend the Braun Flatground contest was held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. People from all over the world showed up. A dedicated Nathan Penonzek drove up from Malaga, Spain which was a 30 hour drive. Next to the flatland competitors we had a few surprise showings; vert rider Gerry Galley for instance, Amos Burke, the 414 crew from England and German flatland guru's Albert Retey, TG, Robert Moeller and Rollo. Also parked outside was a blue Ford Transit van with WeThePeople, Chico, Mars and HDT stickers. If you've been into BMX for a while you know that Marcus Arnoldi made it to Amsterdam as well. While talking to Marcus he mentioned that this would be the last trip for the Transit. The van is not going to make it through inspection so after a good 10 years and 467.000 kilometers of BMX trips it is time to say goodbye.

I did not know what to expect but thought that there would be some kind of connection with BMX as most Downhill riders started out racing BMX. When flipping through the pages I noticed the word: BMX in chapter 1 and started reading. It said: "As a kid I never owned or raced a BMX bike. I never built a plywood ramp in the driveway from which to launch summerlong jumps." That's when I handed over the book to my wife for her to read it and do the review.

A Twenty Inch Production Rating: ** Sometimes at a contest I wonder who the hell is filming for what. It seems like everyone and their uncle has a DV camera of some sort and wants to catch the action first hand. One guy blocks the other to get the best view but screws it up for everyone else. It's good to see that footage gets used for a final product. If you own a video camera and you're only using it to show it to your friends on your own TV, do everyone a favor and just buy a DVD that covers the contest you went to.

Niels Thanild has been on the BMX scene for a long time. The Danish Dragonfly rider wears a lot of hats. He runs his own BMX distribution, he’s a stuntman, he’s a student and he likes to spend time on the road. Most and for all Niels considers himself a bike rider. FATBMX met up with Niels in Tallinn, Estonia at 04:45am to grab a taxi to the airport.
