The UCI World Cycling Centre (WCC) – the training and education centre of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) based in Aigle, Switzerland – is pleased to announce that its first Continental Development Satellite located in China was officially inaugurated today in Shanghai, in the presence, notably, of UCI President David Lappartient, the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach and the President of the Chinese Olympic Committee and Director of China’s General Administration of Sports Gao Zhidan. The Shanghai Velodrome was awarded the UCI WCC Continental Development Satellite label by decision of the UCI Management Committee on 2 February this year. It is the ninth UCI WCC Satellite in the world and the fourth in Asia alongside those of Shuzenji (Japan), Yeongju (Korea) and New Delhi (India). The other Satellites are in South Africa (Paarl), Canada (Bromont), New Zealand (Cambridge), Portugal (Anadia) and Trinidad and Tobago (Couva).
The Shanghai UCI WCC Continental Development Satellite is located on Chongming Island, within a major multi-sport education and training centre created in 2019 and covering an area of almost 56 hectares. It includes a 250-metre indoor velodrome, a BMX Racing track, a BMX Freestyle park, training roads and a weights room. The centre also has athlete accommodation and a restaurant.
The Shanghai Velodrome will host the UCI Track World Championships in 2026, while Chongming Island is known in the cycling world for hosting the annual Tour of Chongming Island, a women's stage race that has been on the UCI Women's WorldTour calendar since 2017.

In line with the new voting system introduced this year to increase the number of members on the UCI Athletes’ Commission, applications are now open to candidates from the BMX Freestyle discipline. Elections for the representatives – one man and one woman for each discipline – will be held during the UCI Urban Cycling World Championships in Chengdu, China, from November 8 to 12. Under the new voting system, not only will the number of athletes on the UCI Athletes’ Commission increase, but there will be men-women parity across all disciplines. All representatives on the Commission will be elected for a term of four years, from the 2017 UCI Congress to the 2021 UCI Congress. To be eligible, candidates must be currently active in the sport or have retired within the last four years before the election date.
Further information, including the eligibility criteria and the application process, can be found here.
Applications for the representatives of BMX Freestyle must be submitted by October 28th. Candidates are requested to send their CV to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
The final list of candidates, as well as more information about the voting procedure (exact venues and timetable) will be published on the UCI website on November 6th, before the UCI Urban Cycling World Championships.
Any athletes participating in the BMX Freestyle competition in Chengdu will be eligible to vote for one
In a fast moving world we can sometimes get lost. With so much happening on the BMX Freestyle side in 2017 with multiple events happening on each weekend, it's nice to enter a quiet month. But 2017 isn't over yet and November has two bigger events happening with the UCI BMX Freestyle Park World Cup Finals taking place in Chengdu, China 3-5 November followed by the first UCI Urban Cycling World Championships in the same city (but different location) on 10-12 November. Daniel Dhers (VEN) and Hannah Roberts (USA) are leading the World Cup at the moment and will do everything within their power to do well and seal the deal in Chengdu on the first weekend of November.
DIG BMX - In the Cut: Territores # 1 - China. Back in October of 2016 we started a new DIG travel project. For the first one we teamed up with official partner brands WETHEPEOPLE BMX and Eclat BMX and selected two riders from each brand to accompany us to a city none of us had ever been to or even knew about. Ningbo is about 2.5 hours south of Shanghai in China and had more than enough good spots and interesting locals to make for an epic trip.
