The UCI announces the updated qualification systems for BMX Freestyle for Tokyo 2020. Following the rescheduling of the Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) asked all International Federations with sports included in the Tokyo 2020 competition programme but whose qualification was not yet complete to review their qualification systems and propose a contingency plan. The UCI did this for a.o. BMX Freestyle, as qualification was not yet terminated for this discipline. Based on the UCI’s contingency plan, it was proposed to make some amendments to the qualification systems which had last been revised in 2020 to take into account the freezing of the UCI rankings as of 3 March 2020, and the change of date of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Since 2016, the Union Cycliste Internationale and Hurricane Group have been working together to support the development of BMX Freestyle and offer the best conditions for progression to riders. The accomplishments achieved so far in both BMX Freestyle Park and Flatland, have encouraged both parties to continue their collaboration until 2028. Hurricane Group and the Union Cycliste Internationale announced today that they have signed a new collaboration agreement until 2028. Initiated in 2016, this partnership began with the introduction of the UCI BMX Freestyle Park World Cups exclusively at FISE World Series stages and in 2018 extended to include the BMX Flatland World Cups also.
Based on the assessment made by the World Health Organisation (WHO) of the current situation related to the COVID-19 epidemic, and the restrictive measures taken by a number of countries within Europe and beyond prohibiting, in particular, gatherings and movement of people, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) today announces a series of decisive measures with the aim of ensuring the maximum protection of health of all those involved in cycling events and sporting equity between participants. Not wishing to contribute to the spread of the virus and with the aim of ensuring sporting equity in its competitions, the UCI, after several crisis meetings held at the end of last week and over the weekend, has taken the following measures:
In line with the announcement it made on 4 November 2019, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) approved its new regulations on the eligibility of transgender athletes to compete in events on the UCI International Calendar. The decision was made at the meeting of its Management Committee in Dübendorf (Switzerland) on 30 January. The new regulations, which will come into effect on 1 March 2020, are designed to encourage transgender athletes to compete in the category corresponding to their new gender, while guaranteeing a level playing field for all athletes in the competitions in question.
What are the eligibility criteria?
Up until then, the eligibility criteria for competing in the corresponding gender-identity category were those agreed on at a consensus meeting organised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2015. The provision of new scientific knowledge led to those eligibility criteria being reviewed – in particular for male-to-female athletes – at a working meeting held in Lausanne on 19 October 2019, and which was attended by the UCI, other International Federations, experts and representatives of transgender and cisgender athletes. As part of the new consensus, it is agreed that if a Federation decides to use testosterone as an indicator, the transgender athlete will only be eligible to compete in the Women category if their serum testosterone level is below 5 nmol/L.

We caught up with Logan Martin, 2018 UCI BMX Freestyle World Champion who speaks about life as a professional rider as well as his Olympic dreams!
The Olympics qualifying period started on 1 November 2018 and will go until 11 May of 2020. That means we're 6 months in and we've got 12 to go. We decided to give you an update on who is doing well at the moment and who are on the bubble making it to the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020. But first things first. A little explanation of how this works is needed. Only 9 spots are available for Men and Women at the first Olympic Games in Tokyo. Clearly, that's not a lot, especially when you know hundreds of riders are trying to make it there. During the Qualification period several events count where riders can score points for their nation. The nation ranking in the end is used to see which countries have conquered a spot to ride in Tokyo. The two best ranked riders per nation form the Nation ranking. Their points get added up and that way it's clear to see where their nation is ranked. For the moment the nation ranking looks like this.
