In loving memory of Mike "Boozer" Brown who left us yesterday we re-post the report of the first Boozer Jam at Sheep Hills, California, his home spot. R.I.P. Mike!
The BMX family got together to support Mike Brown at the first (annual?) Boozer Jam at Sheep Hills in Costa Mesa, California. It was awesome to see all the faces there, from former racers like Anthony Reyes, Chris Breen, Alan Foster, to Olympian Mike Day. From industry types to the BMX media. From old school Sheep Hills Locals to all the current hard working diggers. It was also good to see so many young kids riding bikes at Sheep Hills and the pump track and kiddy section got them going all day long. But also the X-Games and Dew Tour champs showed
up in support of SHL Mike Brown who had an unfortunate BMX race accident last year and is paralized from the waiste down. To see the BMX family cheer him up was incredible and also the industry stepped in by sending him care packages, goodies for the raffle or lended material support for the day. When everyone pitches in, you'll get something good out of it, and it looked like all the people were there for the right reason.
Freddy Chulo explained everyone which sections were happening at a time. It was too crowded to ride all the sections at once. Also the little shredders got some time of their own at Sheep Hills. They're the future of BMX and we need to keep them motivated. Vans brought in 50 pizza's and a bunch of drinks and collected donations/tips/contributions for Mike. Over at the S&M set up T-shirts were sold for Boozer and raffle tickets also made some bucks for Boozer to help pay his medical bills. Thanks to everyone for supporting the cause.
Next to the constant riding that was going on, a lot of people were happy to just catch up. With so many BMX-ers who showed up and the sunny day at the trails, good times were had. It was one big reunion while riders like Corey Bohan, Ryan Guettler, TJ Ellis, AJ Anaya, Brandon Dosch, Anthony Napolitan were riding together with the new school guys, little kids and old school dawgs. No "invite only" event here. The vibe was good all around and AJ Anaya kept things fun on the megaphone. The session over the Boozer line with riders riding through the "BMX Tunnel of love" was amazing. It was chaos, but people were having fun.
A few riders went down hard, especially Ryan Guettler who had been the main initiator to get the legendary dirt spot back in shape for the jam. Get well soon buddy.
BMX is awesome. Let's continue to have fun.
