With the Olympic Games coming up shortly, a lot of the athletes have built up a special bike for the event that they worked towards to for 4 years, actually 5 for the Tokyo edition. Customization is always a fun project. Colour matching with the best part on the market usually results in very nice equipment. The 2021 UEC European Championships took place in Zolder, Belgium today. With over 800 entries still a big event considering the pandemic and the Olympic Games happening later this month. While some chose to opt out of the race to stay safe for the big one in Tokyo, others used the Euros to get in the race mood, pick up a title and made good use of the absence of some of the big dogs. The grandstands on the first straight were packed while masks were mandatory. The crowd got to see some great racing on the proven track of Heusden-Zolder. Things heated up in the Elite Men class and some of the favourites crashed in the first Round but had the Last Chance Qualifier to try to make it through. The Olympics happen every 4 years. Tokyo had a delay of a year but in a few weeks BMX racing and BMX Park will be part of it. It has been a long road for the BMX-ers who made it there. Some have celebrated their participation already by getting to build up a special ride just for the Olympic Games. In the time leading up to the games we are going to check in with the special rides. UEC European BMX Race Championships today in Zolder, Belgium.
USA Cycling announced today the 18 athletes that will be representing the United States at the 2021 UCI BMX Racing World Championships in Papendal, The Netherlands on August 17-22. Reigning World Champion, Alise Willoughby, will be looking for her third world title. Five of the Elite riders, Alise Willoughby, Felicia Stancil, Payton Ridenour, Connor Fields and Corben Sharrah, will be representing Team USA in the Tokyo Olympics on July 29-30, 2021. “Even though we are focused on the Olympic Games, we are still excited to have a World Championship this year in Papendal. We all missed the Worlds last year in Houston due to COVID, so I know everyone will be excited to travel and get back to racing,” said Jamie Staff, Director of BMX. “We have a strong line-up in both the Elite and Junior classes and we hope to bring home some hardware. Post Tokyo, we will be focused on our Junior racers as we look ahead to Paris 2024 and LA 2028.”
