Vintage "Old School" BMX of Northern California. Old 8mm movies that either I, or my mother took of me in the late 70's and early 80's in Northern California. I grew up in San Jose, Ca. and started racing there at Hamman Park.
NBA Supernationals Saddleback Park 1979. Old school bmx at its craziest. Saddleback Park was a wild track.
The Pro class had their own starting gate at the top of a cliff. For those too young to remember Saddleback, it was a wonderland for offroad motorcycle riders. The 700-acre park was located about ten miles east of Disneyland and included two motocross tracks, a BMX track, a dirt track, multiple hill climbs (including the famous Matterhorn), a trials area and miles of trails. It was open every day of the week and held races on Saturday and Sunday.

The footage had never been edited into anything so after transferring thousands of feet of film into a digital format, hidden in all the wonderful motocross footage was six minutes from this BMX race.
BMX is a Bicycle Motocross Racing documentary I made in 1977 while attending film school at San Francisco State University. My father was a bicycle racer in the 1940's, and opened a bicycle shop in Pleasant Hill, CA in the 1960's. He promoted any kind of bicycle racing and in the 1970's, sponsored a BMX team. Most of the film was shot at Merritt College in Oakland. The music track is original music, performed by myself and some friends. Monument Cyclery was a great, creative environment, encouraging and producing some great artisans in varied creative careers...and Me? Still producing films!
