The market for Oldschool BMX bikes and parts has gone through the roof. But asking something, and selling for that price is something else. But if there is a market, and money can be made, there will always be people interested in it. Others love it for the sake of BMX history. They prefer to trade and help a fellow collector out who is looking for that one part that would complete their bike build. Either way, BMX history is being preserved and that's a good thing.
Marcel Hurk over at Oldschool Bike Parts in Heesch puts in the effort to get the Oldskool BMX community together at his place at least once a year. His "man cave" is like a BMX museum in itself. So much to see, so many parts. Crates and boxes full of stuff and he might just have the bike part that you're looking for. Marcel and his crew had ordered three MX Mug Bobble Heads and made trophies of them. They were rad. Three categories were awarded with a trophy. Several collectors had entered their bikes in the "competition" and several of them were beauties.
Gerrit Does made it over and he was asked some questions on the history of BMX. Always good to hear it straight from the source. No one better to ask it as Gerrit is responsible for a LOT of the early BMX developments in The Netherlands, Europe and actually worldwide through the IBMXF and later the integration into the FIAC/UCI.

David Slade has gone on quite the journey in this lifetime-BMX videos to Hollywood director. I think the first time I ever saw his name in print was a full colour spread in a 1985 BMX Action Bike Hole Shot report in mid air sky diving next to an ejected pink Dyno bailing something high above a quarter pipe.
I'd seen him before that on the BMX beat tv show…but that seemed to have not gone into my brain as deep as the Action bike pic. Un be knownst to me at that time David was one of the riders to look out for on the Freestyle contest scene in those days.

Over the last decade, BMX has exploded into the mainstream, with more than 4.5 million riders in the U.S. alone today, its become a global sport since hitting the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Now, the 1980s cult classic movie that greatly influenced the BMX culture, “RAD” is returning to theaters for a massive one-night-only event on March 20, 2025, followed by the world premiere of “A RAD DOCUMENTARY”!
While the film wasn’t a box office success upon its original release, the film directed by Hal Needham, the genius behind Smokey and the Bandit, BMX fans have turned RAD into a legendary cult classic. The film has become an iconic touchstone for fans, and now, it’s talking over 700 screens across North America, courtesy of Utopia and Fathom Entertainment. Whether you remember it for the insane tricks, the unforgettable soundtrack, or just the pure 80’s nostalgia, BMX lovers everywhere have made RAD a cult-classic for the BMX community.
RAD is more than just a movie, but rather a celebration of BMX, the culture, and the spirit that keeps this sport alive and thriving.
Watching the movie the day before the book launch in Laguna Beach, California it was quickly realized that the movie is more of a BMX cult classic than a thrilling movie that needs to be seen. Make sure you have a connection with BMX when you head to the cinema. You'll giggle a few times. Things have changed, but it's good to see how it was back in the mid-eighties. Hell track, Bart Taylor, Skyway, Patterson, Hutch, all in action, and on the big screen. Keep an eye out for a showing near you.
