Australian Caroline Buchanan put the demons of the London Olympics behind her when she won the Elite Women’s title at the UCI BMX World Championships inside the Vector Arena. “I had first lane choice at London,” said Buchanan “I took lane 3 and blew it. I made sure I didn’t make the same mistake again and went for lane one this time around.”

She got the holeshot and cut off Olympic champion Mariana Pajon in the first straight, taking the Columbian out of contention.

“When it comes to finals you’ve got to release the mongrel and get aggressive. I just wanted to get out front and stay out of trouble,” said Buchanan.

Once the dust settled fellow Australian Lauren Reynolds was second and Manon Valentino of France was third.

Auckland was the first international BMX event Buchanan has done since the Olympics. “I put a lot of pressure on myself to succeed.” And it’s not over yet. Buchanan will be contesting the World Downhill Mountain bike and Mountain bike 4 Cross championships – a title she has won twice before – over the next two months.

After a rest day on Friday, the 2013 UCI BMX World Championships resumed Saturday at the Vector Area in Auckland, New Zealand. The Americans capitalized on the training day and rode away with four medals, including a pair of world championships. Connor Fields (Henderson, Nev./Chase BMX) and Felicia Stancil (Lake Villa, Ill./Factory GT) topped their respective podiums as they did in 2012. Sean Gaian (Santee, Calif./Factory GT) and Alise Post (Saint Cloud, Minn./Redline) earned silver medals in their respective categories.

"We knew the preparation coming into the world championships was good," USA Cycling Director of Sprint Jamie Staff said. "But to get a few medals under our belt on the first day of elite racing just reassures us that are headed in the right direction."

Fields, who was the only rider to complete a lap in less than 23 seconds during the qualifying round, was forced to improve his performance in the superfinal. Fields answered the challenge,

The 2013 UCI BMX World Championships continued Thursday at the Vector Area in Auckland, New Zealand, where the Americans earned six more medals, including four world championships. Michael Gonzales (Watsonville, Calif.) earned his second world title in two days after winning the 13-14-year-old boys contest. Competition at the 2013 UCI BMX World Championships began Wednesday at the Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand, with the challenge class races. Michael Gonzales (Watsonville, Calif.) topped the 14-year-old boys podium while Colin Hudson (Longmont, Colo./Factory Crupi) won the 16-year-old boys category. In all, the United States registered eight top-three results, including gold medals for Gonzales and Hudson.

American Michael Gonzales and Robin Van der Kolk of the Netherlands completed a double at the UCI BMX World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand tonight. The pair won their second titles of the meeting in front of a packed Vector Arena on their Cruiser bikes in less than 24 hours when they won the 13-14 boy’s and 17-24 year’s class respectively. On Wednesday night Gonzales won the 14 years boy’s class for 20 inch bikes and Van der Kolk was also victorious on his smaller bike in the 17-24 division.
