London Olympics, you're in, congratulations. How long have you worked towards reaching that goal?
Laura: Thankyou! Bas asked me for the Dutch National Team last year, and I joined them with Rio 2016 as a goal. But then all the training went really good this winter, and I improved a lot so I showed Bas I was already good enough for making the Olympic Team. So it was the perfect timing, finishing school and then have a year off to train full time and try to make the Olympic Team.

Can you give an indication of how your life looks? Are you going to school? Do you work? or are you a full time pro?
Laura: I don’t work and I’m not going to school anymore, I finished

Americans Connor Fields (Henderson, Nev./Chase BMX) and Brooke Crain (Visalia, Calif./Haro Bikes) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the finals of the BMX competition at the 2012 London Olympic Games on Friday. Day three of BMX competition at the BMX Track in London’s Olympic Park began with three semifinal runs to determine the top eight athletes who would compete in a winner-take-all final race. Points equaling a rider’s finishing position were handed out after each run. The four riders with the lowest point totals in each of two heats moved on to the final.

The Olympic Games in London are in the books for BMX. For the second time two sets of Olympic medals were handed out to BMX'ers. The track looked absolutely fabulous and even the English weather cooperated to make it a great event. Focus on this side were on the Dutch racers who all did a great job. Congrats to Laura Smulders on her bronze medal, Raymon van der Biezen on 4th and Twan van Gendt on his 5th place in the finals. Shout out to Jelle van Gorkom for giving it all he got. Respect. BMX racing continued with the men’s quarterfinals on Thursday at the Olympic Games as two of three American competitors qualified to move on to Friday’s semifinal round. Connor Fields (Henderson, Nev./Chase BMX) and David Herman (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Free Agent-Rockstar) will advance to Friday’s round of 16, while Nic Long (Lakeside, Calif./Haro Bikes) was eliminated in the quarterfinals by a single point. Thirty two of the world’s top BMX racers squared off on Thursday in four, eight-man head-to-head heats with the top two riders in each heat after three runs advancing, and the next two best qualifying after five runs. Fields lined up in the second heat and wasted no time in confirming his status as a gold-medal favorite. The nineteen year old jumped out to the lead and secured the number one position in each of his three runs, quickly moving him into tomorrow’s semifinals.

Before the BMX race started at the Olympics I had not watched anything live yet. I like sports, but it's not that I have to follow it. That changes when BMX is on the program. The last two days have been exciting with the Dutch racers doing very well. One more day to go and we'll know who the next Olympic BMX champions are going to be.
