mission statement?
A: That was 2009. After completing school in Australia, I was very much into product design having studied that in school. I kicked around with the wtf! frame design striving for something different from what was then out there, going for a more responsive and unstable geometry. The wtf! frame has a high bb, short CS and low stand over height. With support from mates in Australia and Singapore, we started Impurity. We were racing against time then. I had 4 months to launch the company before enlistment into the Singapore military. Every Singapore guy has to enlist for 2 years. We were very lucky in our search for contract manufacturers in Taiwan, where most of the high-end bike parts are made. We found a cluster of factories, each specializing in making a specific part. They were fanatic about quality control and very professional to work with. Our timing was perfect; Taiwan was suffering the global recession then and the factories were hungry for work. They were very accommodating in accepting the small initial orders from us. Don't know about mission statements but we figured that since every BMX company claims to be riders owned, we needed to be more than that. Keith Bontrager, who pioneered a scientific approach to mountain bike design in the late 1970s, has a famous aphorism: "Strong. Light. Cheap. Pick Two." Bontrager opted for Strong and Light. With due respect to Bontrager, Impurity's mission statement is "Strong. Light. Cheap."
Q: Why does Impurity Bike Co sell direct to customers rather than relying on the traditional method of using distributors?
A: The traditional distro network is jam packed with so many BMX brands out there. As we started just when social media were taking off, we decided to ride on that instead. Let it spread by word of mouth in the parks and thru social media. The guys who buy Impurity parts are typically more attentive to design details and bike geometry. Somehow they seek out impuritybike.com from all corners of the world.
We have also found that by stocking in a single warehouse, we can sell our parts in more colours. The HAF frame comes in 9 colours, the F13 forks in 10 colours. We also have titanium hub bolts in 5 colours. It would be very burdensome to stock so many colours throughout the traditional distro- dealer network. Direct selling also means more affordable high quality parts for our customers.Q: Impurity Bike Co have recently introduced the HAF frame - how is this frame different from any other frames on the market?
A: I can go on and on about HAF but will just mention 3 things: It's a very light but robust frame. All the tubes, except for the seat tube, are made of helix tubings. It weighs in at 1.98 kg or 4.38 lbs. It's reinforced by our signature seat tube gusset. It has a unique symmetrical geometry. In the car industry there is a concept known as ’50:50 weight distribution’, in which both the front and back wheels have an equal weight balance. The chassis layout of the car for the most part is symmetrical. This balance brings about a feeling of ‘neutral handling’ where under most circumstances the car is very controllable. We adapted the 50:50 principle as the 1:1 front-end ratio you see on the HAF.
When you get the 1:1 formula right, the frame’s front becomes symmetrical (as it is 1:1) and it takes some adjusting of the rear triangle to create a fully symmetrical bike. A frame that is symmetrical makes for a bike that’s not only gorgeous looking but is also a pleasure to ride. It comes in 9 gorgeous colours. 3 blacks - Matt, gloss and charcoal. 3 eco colours - green, bronze and aqua. And 3 neon colours - blue, purple and red.
