I started making products in 1986, but the MTNT BIKES name came in 1990, which is a contraction of my nick name, "MUTANTE", and we have been full throtle with a proper team, web site and a bigger production since two years ago, time we turned production to Taiwan.
Who is involved?
-Alex Vazquez (Myself); designing, dealing with Taiwan, getting sponsors, running the Team and the company in general.
-Jorge "Negro" Olveda; is very handy, he can do tons of stuff. Honestly I can say he is a very important part of this company.
-Luis Medina; packing and stickering products. Besides that his sense of humor keep us on the right track.
What parts do you make?
Frames, Forks, Handlebars, Stems, Cranks, Hubs, Sprockets, Seats, Grips, BB's and H/S. And some soft goods, like T shirts, sweatshirts, hats and safety gear.
Why did you start your own company?
At the beggining it wasn't so serious, cause I was so young and it was like a child game for me, friends were requesting the products, then I realized the opportunity and the potential of making a real company of it. And right now, get well known BMX brands over here is expensive. Besides I have the chance to help Mexico to get BMX quality products at low cost.
Is it the first BMX company in Mexico?
Yes it is. We are so proud of it, and we really want to continue pushing our own limits. Now I can see that this effort is really helping out the BMX scene in this country. Besides we are putting a Serial Contest every year, "REVOLCON BMX CONTEST" which is the only serial contest and is getting bigger every time.
Is the scene big enough for you to live off the company or do you consider it a side job for the moment?
We are so lucky, cause we have been breathing BMX and living 100% from it for the last 10 years. We do several things on the company, like BMX demos, building ramps and working with sponsors. All of this BMX related.
Where are the parts made?
Taiwan. In the past we started making the products ourselves, here in Mexico, but it was so hard to get good quality materials, so we turned the production to Taiwan. Which is good quality at a very good price.
Who designs the parts?
All the team is involved on the design in general, giving ideas, testing and using prototype products.
Do you have international distributors?
We are working on it, but right now we are focused on have an International Team that represent what we are.
Who are your team riders?
-JORGE "NEGRO" OLVEDA (RAMP)
-LUIS MEDINA (RAMP)
-ERICK GARZA (RAMP)
-SERGIO MANZO (RAMP)
-CAMILO MONSIVAIS (STREET)
-GABRIEL JIMENEZ (FLATLAND)
What's the goal for MTNT?
Having an International Team, supporting talented riders from this country and grow enough to keep having fun doing it, otherwise it doesn't make any sense.
Last words: First of all, thanks FAT BMX for this interview, it really was a pleasure to do it. Thanks to all the Team MTNT, for believing in this company. Thanks our sponsors; Vans, Oakley, Kang and Antifashion. Of course, thanks to the BMX scene in Mexico, for the support all those years.
Hasta la vista
Alex Vazquez
