The Drug Aware Groundswell Festival at Scarborough Beach in Western Australia has grown steadily into a fantastic event over the past few years. A vital inclusion last year was the BMX bowl battle competition delivered last year by Freestyle Now, the world's longest running action sports enterprise based right here in Western Australia. “With Australia’s Logan Martin’s recent BMX Park Gold Medal win at the Tokyo Olympics, competitions such as this are critical to nurturing our next generation of BMX riders”, said Shaun Jarvis, BMX stunt show rider and owner of Freestyle Now.
The skatepark bowl at Scarborough is the largest in Western Australia and is a world-class venue. For 2021 Zambrero has stepped in as a major sponsor of the BMX competition delivering a fun new twist on the competition with the name now the “Zambrero BMX bowl battle”. It sounds like a great challenge for photographers to get a BMX rider flying out of a “burrito” bowl!
Other supporters of the Zambrero BMX bowl battle include Colony BMX, Division Brand, Cult Crew, Sneaky Wholefoods, Local BMX.
“Competitors can enter pro, open, intermediate or the beginners class. Thanks to Zambrero’s,

In that weekend it will be determined who can call themselves Dutch BMX Freestyle Champion for a year. BMX was part of the Olympic Games for the first time in Tokyo this year and is now officially an Olympic sport. Fans can now also attend an impressive championship closer to home. The NK BMX Freestyle 2021 is part of Rotterdam Street Culture Week that takes place in Skateland, among other places.
Three disciplines
In addition to the traditional Park and Street disciplines that were introduced in 2018 and 2020, a new discipline has been added. Flatland is an officially recognized part of the Dutch Championship for the first time. National Championships are now being held in 3 BMX Freestyle disciplines. 'Street' is ridden on the Street Park course where mainly tricks are done from stairs and rails. Park is ridden on the 'Park' course that mainly has high quarterpipes, boxes and spines'. 'Flatland' is sometimes called 'breakdancing with a BMX bike', the participants perform on a flat floor and do various tricks and combinations there. On Saturday September 11, the competition will take place in the Street and Flatland categories. The Park category will be held on Sunday 12 September.
Rotterdam Street Culture Week
Rotterdam is full of talents and grass roots initiatives in the field of street art, hip hop and urban sports.
After an amazing first digital edition in 2020 that shone a light on talent from around the world, FISE once again reinvented the concept and launched the E-FISE Junior by Hot Wheels, dedicated to the next generation of action sports talent. From July 12 to September 1, more than 345 young people joined the contest. The average age of participants was 12 years old, with girls making up 30% of the entrants. 35 nations from around the world were represented in four disciplines:
BMX, Skateboard, Roller and Scooter Freestyle. With more than 500 videos posted, 5 million videos viewed, 110 000 votes and more than 20 million social media impressions, the bet to reach the biggest world is once again successful.
Rotterdam is the city when it comes to street culture and that should be celebrated. For the fourth year, Rotterdam Street Culture Week takes place! From 4 to 12 September, Rotterdam will be dominated by street culture for a week and the streets, especially in South, will be filled with street art, urban sports and hip hop. During RSCW, the various disciplines, such as graffiti art, BMX, breakdance, street football and spoken word, are connected, blurring the dividing lines and allowing residents and visitors of the city to meet each other.
During this packed week, the different disciplines of street culture are well represented. For example, the sport discipline is represented by NK BMX 2021, skateboarding, roller skating, dance, freerunning,
BMX Freestyle Park was recognized as an Olympic discipline by the IOC in 2017 and has seen rapid development since then. Some of the best BMX riders will now meet for an exclusive show event at EUROBIKE 2021. At the end of the day, the “Lord of the Lake” is awarded to those who pull off the toughest tricks in the “Best Trick” session.
The free practice starts on Thursday and there are three half-hour show sessions on Friday and Saturday. Of course, every rider wants to accelerate and push the limits in order to be crowned “Lord of the Lake” in the late afternoon. So there will be a lot of action in every session, after all, the field of riders is very top-class and the format allows you to concentrate on very difficult and risky tricks.
Rider field: Paul Thölen, Tom van den Bogaard, Timo Schulze, Tobias Freigang, Evan Brandes, Dean Florian, Jan Mihaly, Sikharin Supanmart.
Olympic gold medalist Charlotte Worthington has her mind set on the next Summer Olympics hosted by Paris in 2024. The 25-year-old biker spoke to the press at I Am Team GB’s Festival of Sport event, held at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park a couple of weeks ago. Worthington impressed fans and Vwin88 punters alike with her dramatic recovery at the Tokyo Olympics after falling in her first run, especially with her 360-degree backflip that ultimately won her the gold.
Definitely looking at Paris
“I am definitely looking at Paris,” Worthington told the press at the event. “I know how much hard work it took to get to Tokyo, so I am really looking forward to getting stuck into what will be even more hard work. In the short term, I will be taking a little break. In the long-term, I am going to get back on the BMX and aim for qualifying and competing at the next Games.” -

25-year-old Charlotte Worthington hailing from Manchester, England, is a newcomer in the scene - she took up BMX rather late, at the age of 20. When Freestyle BMX was added to the Olympic lineup in 2017, she was working full-time at a Mexican restaurant. She was later accepted into the Great Britain Cycling Team and has proven that her addition was a great choice: she won her first British and European titles in 2019 and became the first British woman to win a world medal in the discipline (bronze at the UCI
