When it comes to exploring the best of what Mother Nature has to offer while training for fitness for next season, you would be hard pushed to find anywhere more spectacular than Ireland. One of the best ways to check out what the Emerald Isle is all about is on two wheels, with the country packed with a plethora of expansive cycle routes. With that in mind, we have scoured the country to come up with four routes every avid cyclist should have on their list when they are in Ireland.
Inis Mor Loop
The Aran Islands are an important part of Irish culture and one of the best ways to experience this is by cycling the Inis Moor Loop. The route takes you past ancient stone forts and churches, while seal colonies and a vast array of wildlife will keep nature lovers extremely happy. The stone fort at Dun Aengus is well worth checking out, with the prehistoric monument offering some of the most spectacular views you will find in Ireland. Inis Mor is the most populated of the Aran islands, which means you will find enough pubs and restaurants along the route to keep you well fed and watered.
Waterford Greenway
The Waterford to Dungarvan Greenway runs south west along a historic railway line that operated from 1878 to the late 1970s. The route was redeveloped for cyclists in 2017 and is fairly flat from start to finish, making it the ideal place for families to explore a beautiful part of Ireland.
The Greenway runs through six different stages and covers just over 28 miles, so you may want to split up your journey if you are planning to complete it in a day. With plenty of pubs along the way and a ton of gorgeous scenery, this epic cycle route is what visits to Ireland are all about.
Dublin to Wicklow Mountains Loop
If you fancy embarking on a more expansive sports activity trip to Ireland, basing yourself in Dublin during the festive period is a great way to go about it. By scheduling to arrive on Boxing Day, you open the door to experience the annual Leopardstown Christmas Festival – an event that generates massive interest in gambling circles. All of the top Irish horse racing betting sites cover the National Hunt meeting, giving you the chance to grab some extra funds to fuel your cycling trip around the Dublin to Wicklow Mountains Loop. The 46-mile route can be spread over a few days, which allows you to follow the action from Leopardstown in a local pub before tackling the next stage of your journey.
Wild Atlantic Way
The Wild Atlantic Way cycle route is not for the faint-hearted, with the total distance of more than 1,500 miles taking you from Cork to Donegal. Serious cyclists can complete the entire route in week, but to get the most out of the experience you would be well advised to split it into bite-sized chunks. From stunning mountain trails to swimming in hidden coves along the rugged coastline, the Wild Atlantic Way is the ideal place to explore the west coast of Ireland. If the prospect of cycling the route leaves you feeling breathless before you start, it is now feasible to hire top quality electric bicycles at selected points along the way.
