decided to attempt the trick again, for Zane Bradley and Lil Jon, both of whom had been taken out of the competition in ambulances. With the entire crowd fully behind him, Drew nailed a perfect ice pick to the cheers of an awestruck audience.
Second place went to fellow DK Team rider Brett “Maddog” Banasiewicz whose list of tricks included a double whip, a perfect decade, front flip to flat, flipwhips, a vader foot jam and a double whip to flair to huge tabletop. Maddog’s final trick during the heat was an attempt at a fakie front flip up the 8’ quarter. While he didn’t land it during the competition, he did hit it perfectly while waiting for the results as an encore to the crazy trick Drew had just landed minutes before.
Up and coming rider Chris Hughes quickly proved he is a rider to watch in 2010. Chris pulled some amazing tricks in quick succession including a double tailwhip, a 540 and a huge (I am talking epic) flair transfer. Add to his run some tech tricks, a flair to 720 and a 900 (to front wheel blowout unfortunately) and it was no surprise to see this California native and recent Greenville transplant make the podium. Chris Hughes rides fast, goes big and I am guessing 2010 is going to be a good one for him. Mykel Larrin, last year’s Gatorade Free Flow Tour winner, is another rider to watch this year. Mykel’s tuck no hander transfers, downside tailwhips, inverts and alleyoop ‘s over some big gaps are almost Austin Coleman-esque . Larrin was also the only rider to backflip over the hitching post.
Rob Armour was another rider just killing it with banger tricks. Double tailwhips, downside tailwhips, huge flair transfers, cannonballs and a triple tailwhip straight to a front flip. Glenn Saylers hit a double tailwhip up the step up and a 360 double whip ET air combination.
As many great things happened at the Toronto Jam this year, there were unfortunately some injuries requiring both Lil Jon and 15 year old Zane Bradley to be transported to the hospital in ambulances within 30 minutes of each other. Zane Bradley went down hard after a tailwhip crash and was taken to the hospital to be evaluated. Lil Jon was setting up to land a nose bonk off an electrical panel and landed with a pretty obvious leg break. Trish Bare Grounds of Bare Essentials Sports Medicine came to the rescue, creating a makeshift splint out of a 2 x 4 and a broken broom handle. Both riders are out of the hospital and expected to make full recoveries.
Michael Heaton once again did an absolutely great job of putting together the 2010 Toronto Jam. If you don’t know Michael, he is one of those guys, “the good guys of BMX.” Mike puts on the Toronto Jam each year and for anyone who has ever run a contest, it’s a big job. Add moving, setting up, tearing down and dealing with the union rules at the Toronto Convention Center and it’s a Hurculean task. It literally is a race against time to get everything torn down by midnight Sunday night. When Michael is not working on his own contest, you will see him at every Dew Tour stop, volunteering to do whatever is necessary to assist in the event. Congrats to all who competed in the 2010 Toronto Jam. See you at JoMo Pro in April.
