21 pre-qualified to ride in the final event. High winds on Friday forced qualifiers to Saturday morning.
Advancing from the qualifiers were: Scotty Cranmer, Colton Satterfield, Ben Voyles, Drew Bezanson, Ronnie Napolitan, Brett “Maddog” Banasiewicz, Pat “Big Daddy” Laughlin, Nate Berkheimer, Clint Reynolds and Adam Aloise qualifying first. A variety of tricks including front flips, back flips, 360 double whips, 720’s and nac nac variations were enough to move these riders to the main event.
Rain forced organizers and riders to be flexible and resulted in the contest being moved up by a couple of hours to take advantage of a few hour “rain free” window. The 31 riders all brought some incredible tricks resulting in great spectating for everyone at the event regardless of the rain, wind and mud. The final competition consisted of 2 runs each with finalists moving to a 15-minute jam session.
TJ Ellis had a great day riding and his tricks included front flips, backflips, a 360 decade, a huge flip invert and a front flip whip. Dennis Enarson pulled out a truckdriver to opposite truckdriver, a nothing to no foot can can and a pendulum which, among other tricks landed him a spot in finals. Ryan Guettler earned a spot in finals with a huge backflip transfer, 720’s, barspin to x up and a wall ride to late tailwhip off the wall ride. Ryan Nyquist was the only rider to 720 to double bar and his suicide 360 to opposite truckdriver placed Nyquist in the finals as well. Pennsylvania native and all around “trail king” Chris Doyle’s 270 turndown to huge 360 transfer followed by 3 whip, no foot can 360 and 360 invert was more than enough to place him in the finals as well. Corey Bohan, always a contender in any dirt contest, landed a spot in finals with runs including tricks such as: 1 foot inverts, 1 foot 360 to opposite table to opposite 360 as well as a turndown backflip, 360 invert and front flip. Mike “Hucker” Clark threw a huge front flip and a truckdriver to x up.
Brandon Dosch was really the man of the day coming into the final jam session in the top spot. While the competition was stiff, Brandon ended up remaining in that top spot with a 360 double tailwhip and an opposite 360 lookback. Dosch also won the Chipotle “Best Trick” with an insane tailwhip transfer over a 31ft gap. As a reward for his efforts, Brandon Dosch won a year of free meals at Chipotle and $25,000. He also won $1,000 and a Stephen Murray “Stay Strong” Award, which was presented by “Fuzzy” Hall at the Red Bull after party. When asked about his performance Dosch said,
“I knew I could hit that transfer. I was in the zone. I watched the movie Gladiator a couple of nights ago and knew I had to be ‘the last man on the mountain.’ I pedaled to the top on the roll in one last time. Even though it was windy and the rain was coming down, I knew I had this.”
Sure enough he did and was rewarded for his efforts. Top 10 finishers at the event include:
1. Brandon Dosch
2. Chris Doyle
3. Mike “Hucker” Clark
4. Dennis Enarson
5. Ryan Nyquist
6. Corey Bohan
7. Ryan Guettler
8. Drew Bezanson
9. Cameron White
10, TJ Ellis
Despite the wind, rain and mud, Red Bull organizers did a great job with the event. It was great to see so many amazing dirt riders in one place and this year’s big dirt events are going to be incredible. Congratulations to both Red Bull and all the riders for pulling out all the stops to make this event truly remarkable.
