but they wanted more and had their screams ready for Sunday’s final.
Saturday’s high air was so early in the morning that I couldn’t even get out of bed to watch it. Craig Mast did a whopping 10' 2" air out of the highest quarter in the park to win himself a sick surf board. I’m sure his 6 month old baby was stoked for him.
Many guys got hurt in the qualifying rounds, including Dean Cueson, Mark Webb, Ben Wallace, and Mike Hucker Clark. Just before the contest in practice, last year’s champion Ryan Guettler pulled out his shoulder and gave up his spot to fellow Mirraco and Monster teammate Andy Buckworth, who made the podium last year but had a few bobbles in qualifying. Unfortunately “hometown hero” Huntington Beach local and big time crowd favorite Mike Clark crashed in the semifinals and couldn’t entertain the fans on Sunday. But Ryan Nyquist, Dennis Ennarson and Pat Casey represented California well.
Now, to the highlights.
10th place went to Brandon Dosch. He did a 360 double whip on the driveway, a triple whip, and a big double whip air.
9th place went to high air champion Craig Mast, who did an 810 transfer, the biggest trick of the weekend a frontflip WHIP over the enormous 16 foot driveway, a front flip flair.
In 8th place finished Andy Buckworth, who did a 360 double downside whip, decade air which is automatic when Catfish says “nananananana”, and an amazing 900.
Pat Casey came in 7th place after a weekend of great riding. Frontflip on the driveway, straight into a flair whip, straight into a decade into the shark tank bowl. Then he pulled a super dipped 360 double whip, which Catfish said he loved so much he wanted it tattooed on his stomach.
Garrett Reynolds did more tricks than anyone else, packing as many countless combos at unthinkable speed as he could into 45 seconds. This got him 6th place.
After qualifying number one two days in a row Jeremiah Smith finished 5th in finals. Super dialed riding out of Jeremiah, including a 360 bar to tuck on the driveway, right into a bar-spin to whip air, followed up by a 360 downside whip, straight into a big superman seat-grab over the jersey barrier.
The youngest rider in the finals, Brett Banasiewicz got himself 4th place. He did a front flip and clapped his hands behind his back over the driveway, a corked 720, a triple whip on the hip, and a flair whip to finish off his run. All of his tricks were super chill and at good height.
Dennis Enarson got the last spot on the podium. He did a huge wedge to vertwall whip transfer, flip whip, and an unbelievable downside pedal stall on the big sub-wall. Dennis had intense speed throughout his whole run and entertained the crowd like crazy.
Daniel Dhers placed 2nd, just like he did at last year’s event when he pulled out the Cash Roll. This year he had non-stop speed, great lines, and big tricks. He did a 720 barspin to can can, 360 double whip on the driveway, flair no hander, and an alley oop flair, but just slid out on his last trick, a flair whip, which could have won him $25,000.
But the big money went to a well deserving Ryan Nyquist, who did the most amazing run of the weekend. In his home state of California, Nyquist pulled out an action packed, full on thrill ride run to get the win. He did two 360 double trucks, a HUGE 540 double bar, a 720 barspin, and one of the craziest tricks of the contest a 5-6 foot 810 transfer on an 8 foot hip.
The whole weekend here has been the best days of the year for all the guys that were able to come out, and the times had at this contest are hard to compare to any other. Also, now we all know that California girls are truly undeniable and unforgettable. My next event is the ASA Triples in Sacramento at the end of this month. That’s all from the Nike 6.0 HB BMX Pro. Peace!
