For sure this wasn’t a World premiere of Mat Hoffman’s “The Birth Of Big Air” documentary but it was a nice fit to show it at the First night of the Rebel Jam event in Portimao. If there’s one rebel on a BMX bike that pushed riding to the next level, it’s
Mat Hoffman. Not only did he invent over 100 tricks, he took BMX to a level that no one ever thought was possible by building that big ramp in Oklahoma. But the road wasn’t easy, it came with trial and error and plenty of hospital visits. But the level got pushed and it resulted in the
Mega Air discipline at the X-Games.

Purposely I had not watched the video before the screening in Portugal. It’s just so much better when the energy is there of likewise people. It was an emotional ride at times seeing how much the Condor has put into BMX, what he had to go through to make his dreams happen.
Jeff Tremaine directed the 51 minutes long video and his friends
Spike Jonze and
Johnny Knoxville were the producers. It’s available on iTunes for a couple of dollars.
Greg Romero downloaded it and mentioned it was the best money he ever spent on a video. It’s inspirational for sure and should motivate everyone to push the level of BMX in all fields.
The rebel jam had a great start. Let’s see where this leads to when the comp begins. Will the competitors push their riding a few steps in respect for the Condor? Will the level of BMX be pushed this weekend?
