Two days of torrential rain couldn’t hold off Mexico’s biggest BMX event to date, as ‘Red Bull Drenaje’ finally took place in the sewers of Monterrey yesterday, with the UK’s Bas Keep securing third place amongst the international talent. Held in a real urban ditch, the very first Red Bull Drenaje saw 44 of the world’s best BMX’ers take on the concrete sewers, including the UK’s Kye Forte, Bas Keep and Jon Taylor, up against renowned American riders Corey Martinez, Gary Young and Rooftop amongst others. Over a thousand spectators, some travelling 12 hours, came to witness the 27 Mexican, 13 American, three English and one Canadian rider take on the concrete sewers of Mexico. Starting with a two-minute elimination round, points were rewarded for variety of tricks, technical ability and general use of the ditch by the judging panel - Zack Phillips, Ralph Sinisi, Mike Ardelean and Brian Tunney. The highest 20 scoring competitors qualified for the finals, where they had a minute and half to impress the judging panel and crowd. However, the night belonged to the Americans as Red Bull sponsored 22yr old Corey Martinez from Alabama and 21year old Gary Young from San Diego, took first and second place respectively, with the 21yr old Bas Keep from Hastings representing the UK taking third position. Pronounced “dran-har-jayâ€? and literally translated as ‘sewers’, this original contest is sure to be back after such a great reception this year.
