been done in Belgium before. In fact, it was Dawid's first time in Belgium and he's one of the very few riders able to do the 360 to cashroll.
The final was moved forward by an hour on Sunday because of the expected rain that was coming in. The crowd had already arrived to watch practice and once again it felt like summertime. Sunglasses came out, beers started flowing DJ Scale had the tunes going and MC Egon was on the mic. With 5 nationalities under the 8 finalists, Antwerp City Drops' first edition turned out to be an international affair. As soon as Tom Selbeck (NED) dropped in for his first run the bass was dropped and the party was on. After a quick trip back home Tom ended up on place 8 with no-handed flips and no-handed 360-s, supermans and no-footed cancans. 7th place was for Paul Thoelen who once again collected some airmiles. His jumps are so high and in the 8 meter range which is ridiculous if you look outside now and see how high 8 meter actually is. Greg van Tulder wasn't sure he was going to ride but day by day his riding got better and more comfortable. Greg was simply having fun on the jumps that he built himself. Joe Baddeley kicked off his riding in the final with a double backflip. You know the crowd loves flips and doing doubles means twice the noise. 4th for Kenneth Tancré who was missing the fans but still killed it and wanted to prove that Belgium has a future in BMX. The local hero missed out on the podium by one point. Desmond Tessemaker knows how to make a show out of any situation but in Antwerp his riding was well up to par. Flips, spins, clicked variations, the Dutchman was going off and had a killer time. Tom van den Bogaard qualified in first but had Dawid Godziek take over that position in the final. Tom's 360 double downside whips and turndown flips are a treat for the eye just like anything he does. He simply makes BMX look good. Godziek on the other hand brought the next level tricks. The true dirt rider showed how crazy BMX trick have become. His cashrolls, triple tailwhips and twister not only impressed the crowd but the judges as well.
The post contest high air was a close battle between Paul Thoelen and Tom van den Bogaard. The less than perfect 'ramp' (some dirt transition followed by a sheet of plywood) still sent the riders in the air. Tom was in the 9 foot range while Paul got stuck in the 8,5 mark. A new GoPro was the reward for Tom.
It felt like everyone left the place happy. The rain did come in right after prize ceremony which proved moving the program forward was the right thing to do. Antwerp City Drops, till next year.
