Day two of competition was concluded with the BMX Park finals in which the United States' Garrett Reynolds won his first X Games Asia gold, beating out Spain's Sergio Layos and Australia's Chris O'Donnell. Reynolds, who overcame his luggage and bike being lost by the airlines for two days, had minimal time to practice, and as such, decided to take a more spontaneous approach to his runs.
"I planned a little bit of my run in advance, but when I got out there I just went with what I was feeling," said Reynolds. "I didn't think I got first place. Sergio, who I really admire, was riding really well, but I'll take it," he added.
American BMX Vert Rider Chad Kagy Reigns Supreme Again Winning Back-to-Back Gold at KIA X Games Asia 2008
BMX Freestyle Vert In familiar fashion, American riders once again dominated the BMX Vert competition as they claimed two of the top three spots on the podium. Chad Kagy took home X Games Asia gold for the second straight year, showcasing his amplitude and signature flairs to the Chinese crowd. Fellow American rider Koji Kraft was just edged out for top honors by slightly more than one point, while Australian rider Tim Wood rounded out the podium, putting on a strong performance with his patented spins.
"It feels great to come back to Shanghai and win back-to-back gold medals," said Kagy. "I've made some of the most amazing friends through bike riding and those that I've met in China are no different. The local riders here are so motivated and have no fear; they really just let loose and they're improving year after year."
