The Flatland competition took place on a brand-new platform. The judges had a clear view from the stage, ensuring accurate evaluations of every trick. Flatland’s accessible entry requirements, appealing to many young spectators, showed potential to expand the sport’s reach in China.
In Men’s Flatland, 8 elite riders from 6 countries competed in the finals. Germany’s Dustyn Alt achieved a personal best, spinning his way to the top 5 for the first time in his career. Sietse van Berkel of the Netherlands reached 4th place with innovative tricks, while Japan’s Ryo Katagiri earned 3rd place with a smooth style. Jean William Prevost from Canada climbed from 16th in the qualifiers to take 2nd place, while Japan’s Kio Hayakawa claimed victory and the title with his winning routine.
In Women’s Flatland, Japanese riders swept the podium. Nina Suzuki dominated the season, taking her third UCI World Cup win in Shanghai and securing the 2024 title. Yui Kiyomune and Ayuna Miyashima took 2nd and 3rd, inspiring young fans in attendance.
The Park finals in Shanghai unfolded with some weather-related challenges, delaying parts of the competition. Despite the conditions, Sun Sibei led the Women’s Park Final and performed a celebratory victory run in the rain, adding new tricks and impressing the crowd with her resilience. Miharu Ozawa from Japan placed 2nd, and Jiaqi Sun of China completed the podium.
The Men’s Park Final saw impressive displays from all competitors. Japan’s Shoa Matsumoto, at only 15, took 9th place, while Australia’s Sam Grace placed 8th with high-risk moves. Hungary’s Kristof Krauz showed technical precision with complex combinations, finishing in 7th. Maxime Chalifour of Canada secured 6th, while Mike Varga from Canada returned after several years to finish in 5th. Reef Way from Great Britain achieved a strong 4th place.
Three riders took the final podium spots: the USA’s Nick Bruce in 3rd, France’s Anthony Jeanjean in 2nd, and Japan’s Rimu Nakamura in 1st. Jeanjean’s consistent performance this season, with a 1-1-2 record, secured him the overall 2024 title. Nakamura’s powerful final run earned him the win in Shanghai and 1,000 UCI points.
With the 2024 UCI BMX Freestyle World Cup season now completed, the UCI Urban Cycling World Championships will close out the year from December 17-21 in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
