Robinson, Bohan and Guettler create buzz at first event
LOUISVILLE, June 12, 2005 - The Dew Action Sports Tour enjoyed a successful opening at the Panasonic Open at the Kentucky Expo Center, June 9-12. Brilliant athlete performances, led by freestyle motocross rider Travis Pastrana and vert skateboarder Shaun White, appreciative crowds despite rain and heat, and a lively Festival Village created an electric atmosphere at the first stop of the pro tour of action sports. The live broadcasts on NBC gave fans across the country the chance to see the best action sports athletes in the world compete.
Despite inclement weather most of the event weekend, enthusiastic crowds came out each day of the Panasonic Open to witness the awarding of trophies to the first-ever Dew Action Sports Tour event winners.
The winners at the Panasonic Open, and jumping to the head of the tour points standings after the first event in the race for the Dew Cup were: BMX Park, BMX Dirt, Corey Bohan; and BMX Vert, Kevin Robinson.
Robinson, East Providence, R.I., used a 94.25 first run to edge
Chad Kagy, Gilroy, Calif., and
Simon Tabron of Great Britain. Robinson’s run included a no-handed flair across the channel (four-foot gap) in the vert ramp. Kagy parlayed a 93.25 second run to vault into second place. His run was highlighted by a double-tail whip to flair over the channel. Tabron was third as a result of a 92.75 first run.
Dave Mirra, Greenville, N.C., was fourth with a 92.50 second run.
"I am really stoked, Robinson said.
“I take each stop one at a time. I am really looking forward to the next stops on the Tour."
Guettler, 21, of Brisbane, Australia, claimed the first victory of the inaugural Dew Action Sports Tour Thursday night in Freedom Hall. He stole the show by nailing a front flip followed by a huge back flip in his championship run to go along with his technical grinds and stalls.
"This is the best day of my whole life, Guettler said.
“[The Dew Action Sports Tour] competition is so big, it's just unbelievable."
Fellow Australian
Steven McCann placed second. He pulled out all the tricks, including a 720 (two full rotations) and multiple bar-spin variations. Third place went to Scotty Cranmer, the youngest athlete in BMX Park competition at only 18. He was the only athlete to attempt to land a front-flip-takedown (front-flip with a twist) in finals competition.
Missing from the finals were BMX icons Dave Mirra and Ryan Nyquist. Both were knocked out during a preliminary round that was deep in talent.
"The Dew Tour is a legitimate contest, it's not just some show," McCann said.
"You never can count [Mirra and Nyquist] out. They're icons for a reason. They may not have been on top this week but they'll be back. They let us young guys have it this week."
In the other result Saturday,
Bohan captured the rain-abbreviated BMX Dirt competition. Bohan, of Brisbane, Australia, was declared winner of the BMX Dirt competition when rain rendered the course unrideable. Bohan led after the first run of the prelims with a score of 95.50. Cameron White, of Canberra, Australia, placed second at 92.75. Third place went to Cory Nastazio, of Flushing, N.Y., with a 90.00.

Press Conference Quotes:
KENAN HARKIN (Television Host, former professional BMX rider): “[The Dew Action Sports Tour] is very big for us, it’s a big deal for myself. As I said I used to be a rider. Coming up in the 90s when competitions really weren’t the focus or were held more in warehouses and skateparks across the country, in the middle of nowhere, makes this really awesome to be a part of and see how much this has truly grown and to be a part of this is just tremendous.â€?
“We’re doing this not because we like to be afraid, we’re doing this because we love the feeling it gives us. Everyone can enjoy this and that’s why this is a great tour because in the festival village you bump and rub elbows with these guys.â€?
“I take pride in the fact that [action sports athletes] are being looked at more seriously. We haven’t changed, that’s what I find funny. Pretty much biking and skating it really hasn’t changed, what’s changed is the public’s awareness and the respect of the public.â€?
ALLAN COOKE (BMX): “There’s a little strategy, maybe a little more preparation involved. Just a couple days before I came out, I touched up on a couple things I hadn’t done in a while and just made sure I’d come with the confidence, more than something not this big where maybe I would normally wait and roll the dice when you get there, but I want to be prepared and be ready for this so I did a bit here and there. I feel ready.â€?
On competition status: “[Competitions] are more like just friends hanging out and it creates a good atmosphere for everybody out here.
Accessibility of athletes: “It’s just cool to be out there and answer questions for people…We’re just kids out there doing fun things and it’s not like anyone else can’t do it either. It gives someone something to shoot for. Like [Wade] was saying, it’s not like we’re coming in through the back. I’m parked and sleeping in my motor home in the parking lot and any fan can come and knock on my door and ask for a sticker or something.â€?
On sports & athleticism: “The preparation that any professional athlete goes through, I can appreciate that, in any sport.
Are action sports getting too commercial: No, I don’t feel that it’s taking anything away, I mean what can it hurt. It’s going to promote the lifestyle, not just the sport and we live good lives and have fun and it promotes fun and I don’t see anything wrong with that.
The next stop on the Dew Action Sports Tour is the Right Guard Open in Denver, July 7-10, followed by the Vans® Invitational in Portland, Aug. 18-21, the Toyota Challenge in San Jose, Sept. 8-11, and the PlayStation® Pro in Orlando, Oct. 13-16.
