American BMX Freestyler Hannah Roberts is just 22 years old but has still amassed an impressive list of achievements. She has several UCI World Cup titles, five World Championships, and an Olympic silver medal. That silver medal came during the Tokyo games in 2021 when her score of 96.10 was a little short of Great Britain’s Charlotte Worthington, who took gold with a score of 97.50. Three years later, Roberts is hoping to win that elusive gold medal.
“I knew that there were some things that I could do to improve my score and hopefully take that gold back. I messed up in the moment. That's all it is,” Roberts said of her performance in Tokyo.
Since winning the 2017 world title when she was just 16, Roberts has been the pre-eminent figure in women's BMX Freestyle competitions. Her latest triumph at the 2023 World Championships in Glasgow marked her fifth time donning the prestigious rainbow jersey. Of course, following crashes at both the World Championships in Abu Dhabi and the final World Cup event in Australia in 2022, it’s clear she’s not invincible. But despite those crashes and injury setbacks, she’s determined to persevere and go for gold in Paris this summer.

With the UCI BMX Freestyle Park World Championships around the corner we fired off some questions to 4-time UCI World Champion Hannah Roberts (USA). Will she be able to make it 5 in Glasgow?
You’ve won the UCI BMX Park World Championships title a few times already, where have you been successful over the years?
Hannah Roberts: I have been successful on and off the bike that have helped tremendously during contest. I have always had goals and an idea of where I wanna be at short term and long term. I might not always hit all the goals but it has kept me focused the last few years and has helped me be successful.
The UCI World Championships have taken you to China, France, and Abu Dhabi. Are you excited to get to Glasgow, Scotland this year?
Hannah Roberts: I’m pumped to go to Scotland! I’ve never been before and my parents are going so we are definitely taking some time to explore and to really enjoy the country!
It’s hard to get to the top, but it’s even harder to stay there. Can you confirm?
Hannah Roberts: It is harder to stay at the top. There’s always people pushing to beat

Do you remember the first BMX event you went to this year and how did it go?
Hannah Roberts: Battle of Midwest at The Kitchen BMX and Skatepark. I got first place in the Expert class against the guys
How many weekends/days were you away from home and at a BMX jam/contest or on tour?
Hannah Roberts: About 110 days or 4 months I was at a contest or event.
What was the best event you went to this year that gets your vote?
Hannah Roberts: I think the two weeks in Chengdu, China was the best trip this year. I was with all my friends and got to explore a little bit.
What contest placing were you stoked on this year?
Hannah Roberts: The UCI World Championship! I'm so blessed that I was able to keep my riding together and get that top spot.
