When you got picked up by Mongoose, was that a big relief as far as dealing with visa and stuff?
Cam: It helped cause I have a 3 year deal with Mongoose, so I was able to get my visa for 4 years, but it cost me a pretty penny. Like a lot of cash!
Can you explain a little how hard it is for a foreigner to settle in the USA?
Cam: It's a long hard process that costs a lot. So if you're going to do it, you best make it worth it. Or you could get married to American Shela, and then you will get citizenship, but I don't want that. I love Australia way too much.
Where do you live in the USA during the contest season?
Cam: I Live in Las Vegas. It's a pretty sweet place. When people ask what do you want to do, you can pretty much do anything you want in that town, so we're never bored. And there is so much to ride. Ricardo's yard and Tj's yard are two of my favourite places ever, so I'm stoked when it's not windy so I can ride in the 45 degree heat all day J.
Are you enjoying two summers per year?
Cam: It's ok. I miss winter a lot. I used to ski and snowboard every year, since I was about 4 years old, so it sucks I haven't been able to do that, but I'm getting used to the heat so I'm starting to enjoy it.
Did you prepare with special tricks for the upcoming Dew Tour series or any other big contests?
Cam: Yeah I tried a bit to work on a few tricks. The format of the Dew tour this year is 2 runs - only 1 counts, so pick your tricks carefully cause only 3 or 4 tricks will count. Last year it was 3 runs, 2 counted, so you needed consistency then, but not this year. Think of the most insane tricks you can and go get 'em dialled. That's the only way you're going to win. I've been sending a lot of triple tail whips at Lavin's house on the resi, I really want to get that trick on lock.
Are you enjoying the foam pits to learn new tricks?
Cam: I don't use foam pits much. I usually just use jumps. I have a foam pit at home but I've only learnt 2 tricks into it. I don't like it, but a lot of the boys do. Tj's resi is good, but I usually just bounce from the top onto the rocks and dirt and crack ribs, like I did the other week, so getting a nice soft landing jump to send myself on is ideal. But if one day I wake up and say I feel like sending stupid tricks today like backflip triple whips or something, then I go ride foam.
Is dirt priority for you or do you dabble in other disciplines too?
Cam: At home I only ride park because the trails we have are really small, and the parks are big. But this year when I get home, look for big things in my yard. Over here, I just wanna ride dirt in contests. That way is chill and fun and I have a ball.
Could you become a vert rider if that's where it's at?
Cam: No way in the world. I respect vert riders so much. Anyone that watches a Dew tour contest, will realise how crazy it is. When you crash, it's not a matter of "I got out of that one with a bruise" it's more like "how long was I knocked out this time". And I've grown up dirt jumping, so I can't just stop riding it, no matter what people think is cool, I hate being cool, I just wanna go ride trails.
Are you someone who needs to know what's the latest in BMX land or are you happy doing your own thing?
Cam: I just do my own thing. I mean if someone lands something crazy, I wanna know about it. But other than that I just want to go ride my bike. It doesn't matter if I'm by myself, or with a group, I wake up, and that's all I want to do.
Can you describe the Australian BMX scene in 20 words?
Cam: Australians own BMX all across the world and I will end it with words like, Crazy, Fun, Free, Defined, United.
Are you coming to Europe any time soon?
Cam: I'd really like to, but I have no free time on my calender this year. It's crazy how many things I have to do, but hopefully next year I will get out there. I'm super keen.
Last words?
Cam: Thanks to my Family for everything, I wouldn't be here without their support and love, and thanks to my girlfriend Michelle for being so understanding when I'm gone a lot of the time.
