Name: Aaron Zwaal
Hometown: Nijmegen, the Netherlands
Occupation: Photographer/mediadesignstudent
When did you start taking pictures? Aaron: Got my first DSLR around '08, after that it just kept growing on me.
Is it BMX mostly or naked girls too?
Aaron: Sadly BMX mostly, digging going outside and just s
hoot stuff as well, I want to do more diverse stuff but BMX is
such a big part in my life so that's what's in front of my lens the most for sure!
Can you list your camera gear? and what do you take with you most of the time?
Aaron: Currently shooting with a Canon 60D, feels way better than the usual 550D or something. My Setup for now is: Canon 60D with camera grip (I really love shooting with a grip now, feels more manly)
Lenses: Canon 50mm f1.4 Sigma 70-200 2.8 (bought it a week or so ago!) Tamron 17-50 f2.8 (which recently shows an error on my camera after taking a picture, weird) Tokina 10-17 Fisheye Lensbaby composer Flashes: Yongnuo YN-460 with broken battery cover after it fell, tie rip does wonder. Yongnuo YN-560 Triggered by Cactus V5′s Also have a Mamiya msx-500 The lenses are a Pentacon 50mm 1.8 and 135mm 2.8 are also usable on the 60D with a converter.
Most of the time my Lowepro mini-trekker bag consist of: Canon 60D, Tokina fisheye 10-17, Canon 50mm f1.4, Tamron 17-50 2.8, 2flashes with Cactus v5 triggers, 2 flashstands and the Mamiya when I can be arsed to take it with me since the lightmeter is broken.
Do you have a bad back yet from carrying a heavy backpack all the time? Aaron: I guess not, guess I am having a strong back or haven't watched brokeback mountain yet, last weekend with fully packed backpack and sleeping bag and stuff was definitely a hit on my
back though, slightly sore still! Glad my bag has clips around waist and chest, saves a ton!
Do you hate bringing the equipment to events, wouldn't you rather ride, or is it worth it most of the time? Aaron: I don't mind packing stuff up for jams, hate riding when it's busy so rather have a chilled session outside a jam. Completely fine with only shooting pictures at an event, most
of the time I like to just relax and take pictures while I'm at it. Overall it's really worth it, seeing friends again is also better than riding in my opinion as well.
Now you're not afraid of a brewski or two. What's the trick to shooting pics in focus after you had a few? Aaron: Go with the flow and try to have fun for sure! and don't be satisfied too easy about pictures, the next day you could be bummed about your work.
Can you explain how hard it is to make a buck selling BMX pics? Aaron: Really hard, apart from free clothing and stuff I haven't had any pictures sold. It's a long road and you got to stay motivated to keep shooting, you are also as good as your last picture. Magazines also want unpublished stuff while it's so easy to just put pictures online for feedback and other peoples enjoy. Jeremy Pavia has a great series of articles on BMXUnion though abo
ut those kind of things, suggest to check that out if you are interested in those kind of things!
Who do you look up to? Aaron: Nathan Beddows always has great coverage from about every event haha. Vince Perraud also has great diverse work, really dig his diversity. Devon Hutchings shoots really legit stuff as well. Jeremy Pavia is also one awesome guy!
Where do you see yourself in 2 years from now? Aaron: In 1 1/2years I'll be out of school with Mediadesign certificate. Going to be so glad when that's done, so much bullshit I never want to use in my life. Going to Prague in a week and this summer going to Barcelona for a month with the weareorangejuice crew so that's going to be a lot of pictures and new opportunities I hope! It would be awesome to get the ball rolling and in 2 years shoot pictures for magazines and brands! Hit me up! haha
Cool Aaron. Anything you want to add? Aaron: Yeah, thanks Bart for this interview! Roy for the sweet cap from weareorangejuice this weekend. BMX and photography is a beautiful thing. Also feel free to hit me up about anything! facebook, twitter, gmail whatevers!
