Mat Hoffman is one of our living legends. No need for a detailed introduction. We caught up with the Condor to see what he has been up to.
It seems like you've been off the radar a bit lately (latest update on the site is from 24 June 04). What have you been up to?
It’s been pretty crazy like always… I’ve been riding, flying, being dad and many other random things that I cross paths with. I apologize for being so slack on my site, but I am working on an entirely new site that will be up in a couple weeks with all new content from my past year of activities and explorations, i.e. WildBoyz trip in Mexico, a 9 day camping trip with DMX, Cameron Diaz, Rebecca Romijn, Extreme Makeover Home Edition appearance, the new OKC park shows, shows and more shows… I’ll try harder to keep this one updated.
Is your body in good enough condition to pick up the kids and go for a walk?
Picking up the kids and walking is pushing it, but we go riding. I get another surgery (#16) this Thursday to shave out some arthritis in my knee, so maybe I can go for a walk with the kids after I rehabilitate.
How is the new park in OKC?
It is awesome! We are going to have CFB here May 13-15. We’ll have a concrete park comp, dirt, vert and were working on some sort of flat jam too. It will be worth the trip.
Are you still doing the demos in Disneyland?
It’s Universal Studios in Orlando. The next run is March 19-30th. It’s still rated the best show Universal has ever had.
When's this year's BoomBoomHuckJam tour? Looking forward to it?
It’s June and July. We just finished putting the old show together and did one in Arizona. Fox filmed it and ran it before the Superbowl, pretty crazy. Yeah, I’m kind of looking forward to it. It’s a gnarly tour.
What's the longest trip you've done on the Propeller Para glider? Any close calls?
I usually go fly for an hour or two. Yeah, I’ve had a few close calls, but live and learn. I’ll have some cool photos and video of this new toy on my new site.
The new H*B video is out. Are you in it?
No. weird right? The video covers a Euro tour to different spots and I was booked at a show in England for that NASS event at the same time, so I couldn’t go on the HB tour. The only good footage I had was taken from the Boom Boom Huck Jam and they wouldn’t let me use it, and it was winter time when we found out, and the weather didn’t cooperated to get new footage… I am working on a personal video I hope to have out before long.
A few years ago when you were working on the video game stuff you envisioned a future where games would get interacted with the internet so you can link the players through to the Hoffman Bikes website, give them a virtual company visit and have them order bikes/parts, etc. It seemed like endless possibilities. Where are we right now as far as computer games/internet are concerned?
Activision put new risky type game concepts like that on hold because they had a few misses that put them in a tight spot. Tony’s Underground game and the True Crime game is getting them back on their feet, but no word yet. I hope they want to do something else cool like what we talked about in the future, but we’ll have to wait and see….
What's the latest gadget you bought?
An audio altimeter that tells me how high I am when I’m skydiving without having to look at my wrist altimeter or the ground. It also logs the number of jumps I make, how high I jump from, the delay before I pull, the height I deploy, and how fast I fall. No more manual logging skydives! Oh, and I got a new PowerBook G4. mmmmgood
