You've got some other hobbies too like working on motorcycles and cars, helping out at your mother's restaurant, do you even feel any pressure from your sponsors to ride more?
Sergio: Not really... Everything else I do I do it when there's no time to ride. I try not to put those things in the way and I'm really happy with my sponsors.. they are really relaxed and I also try to do my best everywhere I go.
You recently got a dirt jump spot. How did that work out?
Sergio: It was there a long time ago. One of my best friends got a piece of land that he is not using at the moment. He used to ride with us and our trails got torn down and we decided to build the new trials there. It's a really good place where we go just to hang out and talk.
Do you believe more and more people are aware of what BMX (freestyle) is about?
Sergio: I believe so... I think that BMX is going further and further and I'm really glad about it because it needed its place on the world and I think it's getting there, but I also miss the old contests where everybody killed themselves for nothing.
How do you explain to somebody who has never seen BMX what you do?
Sergio: Jumping on bikes and doing tricks... sound stupid but it is the easy way!
Traveling is a big part of BMX. You put your bike in a guitar bag. What band do you tell you're in when people ask you?
Sergio: Well if they are not from the airport I tell the truth but they haven't asked that question jet... but so many times they ask what is inside and I don't lie! It's my instrument!
Does this trick still work at the airlines? Isn't your guitar very heavy?
Sergio: It still works! and I think it is the best way to travel if you don't want to pay extra for the bike but they always say that you can carry it on and you have to ask like you don't mind too much about your guitar but I never had any problems except when the bag was so beat up that the chain was hanging out and the sprocket was hitting the check-in desk.
What bike parts have you helped design for FlyBikes?
Sergio: Well everybody helps designing the parts at Fly bikes. Everybody gives their ideas and helps all they can which I think is good. I try to help with all that as much as I can. It's fun for me and it also makes me think. So we can say everybody makes the fly parts except for the signature parts.
Have you given in to the breakless and big bars trend yet? What bars do you use?
Sergio: Hhahaha I have tried of course and I did like it but I think that everybody needs a size of frame that goes well with him and the bars are not different than that so my bars are not too big, but I'm not either.. And about the brakeless thing, I really like it but I will miss so many things I like that I can't be that way all the time.. but it definitely helps you on some other ways.
2009 just started. Any contests and trips coming up?
Sergio: Well Simple Session is coming and trips are starting to come around too.. I have no idea what this year is briging but I can tell you it's going to be fun!
Thanks to: My Mom and my brother, to David and Povah because no matter what, they are always there. To all my sponsors and to all my friends that make me feel like I have a big family, to Tom and Tina for always being down to help and to Perico because he is always down to show what a friend should be!
