Karl from the UK left a message in our FATBMX guestbook and asked for an interview with Garrett. We automatically assumed he meant Garrett Byrnes. We try to satisfy our visitors and got to work. We've tried to do a Cory Coffey before but she never got back to us. We didn't know how well Garrett is with computers but we were in luck as the T1 guys told us that Garrett had just made it to Austin to hang out. With a little bit of pressure from his sponsor (not likely), Garrett sent back the answers to the questions in a matter of days.
Karl, this one's for you.
FATBMX: How come Garrett Byrnes T1 sweatshirts are only 10 bucks?
Garrett: The t1 sweatshirts are only ten dollars because t1 clears old stock to make room for new stock so kids can get good deals if they keep an eye out...
FATBMX: What has landed you in Austin this time?
Garrett: When it's twenty degrees where you live, there is never a reason not to go to Austin ....warm... friends ...riding...what's better
FATBMX: You seem to be doing your own thing minding your own business. What have you been up to the last three months?
Garrett: Well I have a broken hand so that has been my problem lately...spent two months in a cast and couldn't ride for a few months before that.....still broken now but I have no health insurance...I go to an interview for a charity surgery next week so hopefully that works out....
FATBMX: Did it take a while to get used to a regular lifestyle after being on the road for so long on the T-1 tour?
Garrett: Well to tell you the truth I didn't want to stop, it was some of the best times of my life and as far as I am concerned the trip never ends.....
FATBMX: What did you miss badly when you arrived back in the USA?
Garrett: I would have to say I missed Joe ,Rueben and all of the people we became friends with on the trip....they are the best
FATBMX: Life on the road teaches you lessons. What did you learn spending 6 months living in a sleeping bag?
Garrett: Well I can tell you that Rueben learned to keep his sleeping bag closed at the end so you don't get attacked by crabs in Australia...the truth is there is not enough room on this computer to say how many things I have learned.....opens your eyes so much it's unbelievable.....
FATBMX: Uncommon terrain, lots of speed and unique lines come to mind when I think about Garrett Byrnes riding his bike. Do you see yourself as an original rider looking for different stuff?
Garrett: Man I just want to have fun and the faster the better...
FATBMX: A few years ago you were hanging out and riding with Van Homan a lot. Did that push your riding?
Garrett: Hanging out with friends always pushes your riding ..we had some of the best times together ....we have such hectic schedules now we only get to ride together every few months........
FATBMX: Van seems to be more in the picture than you are, can you explain why that is and do you care?
Garrett: It comes down to Van and I being different people...Van has the most drive that I have possibly seen in a person....if he puts his mind to something it will work no matter what...he could win the Tour de France if he wanted to......and then there's me, key words for me ''lazy and happy'' as long as I am happy I will be lazy and if I am lazy I am happy.....anyone who knows me knows this......
FATBMX: How's the ride on T-1?
Short and simple ...the ride of a lifetime
FATBMX: What direction would you like to see BMX freestyle take?
Garrett: More touring ...kids realizing that they can have a jam in their town and it will be more fun than any contest.
FATBMX: Do you believe that there will be a day when everything in BMX is owned/done by riders?
Garrett: I believe it will happen, it just might take a while.......
FATBMX: Who do you look up to?
Garrett: Anyone having fun and not seeking attention....
FATBMX: last words:
Garrett: Riding will take you as far as you let it,
