American professional BMX rider with 16 X-Games medals, 39 X-Games competition starts and 60 Dew Tour finals appearances will be the first Head Coach of Team USA Olympic's first BMX Freestyle.
The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is pleased to announce that Ryan Nyquist (USA) and Nina Buitrago (USA) have been re-elected to represent BMX Freestyle Park riders on the UCI Athletes’ Commission, in a vote organised during the 2021 UCI Urban Cycling World Championships that took place in Montpellier (France) from 4 to 8 June. Ryan Nyquist and Nina Buitrago were chosen from among the five candidates – three men and two women – by the athletes registered for the event.
Nina Buitrago obtained 70.7 % of the votes for the female candidates, while Ryan Nyquist reached 39.0 % of the votes for the male candidates. The voting participation rate was 65.1 %.

BMX Freestyle is making its Olympic Debut in Tokyo this summer, and USA Cycling has tapped Champion® Athleticwear and the Levi’s® Brand to be the official apparel providers for the BMX Freestyle National Team.

With the exception of a few vert riders, most of the mid-school BMX professionals from the 1990s and early 2000s have moved on from X Games competition. Not Ryan Nyquist though. Ryan started competing at X Games in 1997 and still gets invited. He's not getting invites based on legacy either; he's still progressing his skills on BMX Dirt and Park at a remarkable pace.
