industries for money’s sake, but my heart is and always will be into BMX.
FATBMX: You've been involved with plenty of bicycle companies over the years, what's your current situation, job-wise?
Scot: Sports Marketing for many BMX and sport related companies. Eddie Fiola & I have formed BMXFS to promote freestyle events and there’s still some ties to bikes.. Secret shiznit… J
FATBMX: Organising an event requires a lot of energy, contacts, time and experience. Who are all helping you out putting the 40 years of BMX together?
Scot: Well, it’s become a 15-16 hr a day, 7 day a week adventure ! It started as an Old School Collector Show to celebrate OUR sport.. as it grew I have leaned on the industry for support, BA Anderson of the ABA , Steve Van Doren of Vans, my Lil Bro Sean Ewing, PK, Noah-The Mayor of Hollywood, Tammy and Giovanni of Hollywood Sports Park & Bellflower BMX, Josh of Linq BMX, Lalo, all the Old School sites, Fat BMX, many OS friends for their incredible memorabilia, Jeremy Moser came in with the Rad display and preview to the 25th Anniversary Of The Movie RAD, Blair and Krista with the Bixby Knolls Biz Assoc. (Where Expo is ), the bands Spicolles and Voodo Glow Skulls, Mike Rodriques of Crit Plate and many many more… all our sponsors have been awesome!
FATBMX: Old School BMX has become really popular over the last 5 years. Can you explain why you think that's the case?
Scot: I believe the sport now has several generations. As they mature, they have been able to relive their past. Like a Car collector may do; as he or she gets older they are able to afford things they could not as a kid, The fewer sold the more valuable they have become, they appreciate the better bikes, the innovative designs and also the crude ones for their uniqueness. Many also like to show their kids the models they rode and share racing stories of victories past!! …besides the fact many of us don’t want to grow OLD!! Ha ha ha ha …
FATBMX: Will you have something on display at the event that was there at the first race you organised 40 years ago?
Scot: Absolutely.. I have photos blown up into posters from our first events in 1970. I have the finishline and caution flags from the Yamaha Bicycle Gold Cup, flyers from the first tracks, the first BMX Schools, Pro races and much much more.. add trophies, posters, bikes, jerseys, pants, helmets and videos too ! The History Expo is set up in 5 Year modules, 1970-75, 1976-80 etc.. Really unique and complete.
FATBMX: You came over to Holland in 1983 as an MC for the BMX Action Trick team, do you remember much from that trip with Buff and RL?
Scot: Had a GREAT time! Stayed with Gerrit Does and his beautiful wife Meike, their sons Pieter and Nico.. we are great friends to this day! Mike Buff & I just spoke about that trip the other day! I have pictures from it and we had been in Saudi Araiba just before that. We even had to create a phoney baptism record for one of the guys to get past customs ! It was signed by “The Reverad Charles R. Narly CMD” !!! LOL.. hahaha That letter will be on display too!
FATBMX: Where has BMX taken you?
Scot: Gosh, around the globe, into many industries from promotions to manufacturing, to publishing, to Television production, to haul ass racing too! I have met thousands of quality people through BMX.. I am BLESSED!
FATBMX: What's your goal with the 40 years of BMX event?
Scot: To celebrate all the efforts of track operators, the racers, the manufacturers, the sanctioning bodies and share the stories and fun that BMX has given so many!! Plus I want to show the Track Operators around the world what can be done to promote and market OUR sport besides the normal races. Too many people get burned out doing the same old same old… the FUN goes away. I am working with the ABA to create a Track operators marketing Manual that gives SIMPLE step by step directions and info of how to make it happen!
FATBMX: There are two different days on two different locations, can you briefly explain the program?
Scot: Actually there are three days with 12 events Bart….
