Current UCI number two ranked rider Sam Willoughby will headline Australia's team at the opening round of the UCI Supercross World Cup in Pietermaritzburg this weekend. The Redline rider is considered one of Australia's best hopes for the 2012 London Olympic Games and this weekend's Supercross World Cup opening round will provide the first real indication as to how Willoughby stands up against the world's best riders.

BMX Australia Probikx Tour leader Brian Kirkham will be hoping to take his recent success on home soil into the first leg of the Supercross World Cup too. The South Australian picked up a third among a strong international field at the recent Oceania Continental Championships in New Zealand and, raced well at the ABA Winter Nationals in Arizona to be considered a good chance of making a final this week in South Africa.

Due to recent inclement weather, conditions at Virgin Regional BMX in Virgin, Utah have made it impossible to prepare the track for the Challenger race originally scheduled for this weekend, April 8-9, 2011.
As a result, the race will be rescheduled to the weekend of April 22-23, 2011 in order to maintain the integrity of the Challenger Series. Two Challenger races will be run on Saturday, April 23rd as was previously scheduled at the Virgin track.

The UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in Pietermaritzburg took a major step closer to reality on Wednesday when the first truckloads of ochre-red soil for the world class track arrived at Alexandra Park where the city’s mayor Mike Tarr was on hand to move the first sods into place. The permanent BMX track will sit alongside the Pietermaritzburg cricket oval and the cycling velodrome, and will provide an eagerly awaited year-round base for the Olympic sport enthusiasts in the region.

Oceania Continental champions Sarah Walker and Marc Willers head an eight-strong team that leaves for South Africa at the weekend for the opening round of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup. The first round will be held in Pietermaritzburg which also staged last year’s World Championships. It is the first of five rounds that includes the test event at London ahead of next year’s Olympics.

Pretoria based BMX star Dean Holdstock recently arrived back on home soil to prepare for the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup season opener in Pietermaritzburg after a busy four month stint in the US. The injury plagued youngster, who missed out on last year’s World Champs due to two cracked vertebrae and a slipped disc which he sustained in a bone buckling crash at the Alrode in Gauteng just two weeks before the international event, is hopeful his misfortunes are a thing of the past and has been working hard ahead of next weekend’s event.

“At the moment I feel I’m in the best form I’ve ever been in,” said a determined Holdstock. “I felt really strong before my crash last year and I definitely feel I’m back up there again now.”
