Having the right sized bike is everything. The 18 inch is awesome for a rider who would be struggling with a full sized 20" bike and has outgrown the 16" bike. Parents of 8-11 year olds ask me all the time what size bike they need to get for their kid. Depending on their size I can recommend the 18" version simply because they'll be able to handle the bike.
