The event has attracted riders from Canada, New Zealand and all over Australia, including the likes of Sarah Walker, Tanya Bailey, Lauren Reynolds, Ziggy Callan. Sam Willoughby, Luke Madill, Jamie Gray, Michael Robinson, Michael Fenwick, Khalen Young, Glenn Codega, Alex Cameron, 80’s legend Jamie Hales and a whole lot of others. Even professional wrestler Joey Russell Junior came along to race this year.

There have been just 3 winners in the hotly contested Open Men's class over the past four years. Luke Madill took the wins in 2006 and 2007, Josh Callan won in 2008 and Scott Lacey in 2009. All three past champions returned for BSX2010, Luke Madill making a special trip to squeeze BSX in only a couple of days after becoming the Australian 4X champion, yet again. There were also a bunch of talented young riders who were expected to keep the past champions honest included Kyle Horton, Tom Siinmaa, Levi Collins, Jonathan Hoare, Connor Hunter, Luke Pretlove and Ryan Henderson, just to name a few. An in form Bodi Turner was a dark horse for the event. But each of them would have to make it all the way through eliminations in a record breaking field of 39 riders. Ziggy Callan was the only woman to put on her flat pedals for the day, she loves BSX and decided to take on the guys since there was no class for her.

The 30 & Over Open wheel class also broke attendance records with 14 riders. There was a push for a round of 16, but fell just two riders short. Simon Anderson was there to attempt to take an unprecedented fourth straight BSX win, but Tony Harvey wasn’t going to give Simon a run for his money. Other contenders included Shane Jenkins, who was looking for his fourth podium in a row, Chris Van Winden who’d made a few BSX finals now, Craig Walczuk, Jamie Bullows, Simon Trewin and Paul Knox who made the top eight last year. Throw in the interstate riders Paul Tomkinson, Craig Manual, Jason Eecen, Jim Beattie and pro wrestler Joey Russell Junior (aka Craig Austin) and let's not forget BSX first timer Peter Stagg.

When people started to arrive at the Alienation BSX the rain was still falling and the track was still under wraps, but the forecast didn't look good. Actually we had to abandon the idea of using transponders for timing because if we had got water in the start box it could have shorted everything out, so it was back to the old school, a stop watch.

The start of the event was delayed a while so the track was given time to dry. Lucky the Kinglake West CFA had setup early, they kept punters fed and warm until practice eventually started.

The track was a little slick at the start of practice but was drying up nicely through the session. The carpet certainly helped riders get some grip around the slick corners. Since most riders seem to run slick tyres no one was going particularly quick in the shortened practice session, so no one really stood out. Young Hayden Fletcher was hitting up the jumps and pulling some big airs, he seemed to be the only guy to really have fun with it during the practice session. Time trials

By the time the time trials were on the track had dried significantly. Luke Madill put in a hot time early, but the crowd were quiet. It wasn’t until Hayden Fletcher put in a great run boosting the first two straights that the crowd started to get into it. The time trials were pretty much incident free until Lachie Tye's run. He did manage to get in a good lap until he launched off the last corner for quite possibly the crash of the day. Ziggy Callan, the only woman game enough to get her bike out put in a great run too, proving she can hang with the boys. In the end it was Josh Callan who got the fastest lap in followed by Kyle Horton, Luke Madill and Scott Lacey.

In the 30 & Over men, Paul Knox put in a smooth run to qualify in the top 8 knocking out previous finalist Chris Van Winden and former Australian Champion Jamie Bullows to name a few. In the last timed run of the day Jim Beattie got a good snap but when manualling through the first doubles seemed to put his front wheel down a little early and since it was pointing off to the side of the track he followed and went down into a flat spin. He got up with a smile on his face and continued his run. Simon Anderson took the fastest lap with Tony Harvey in second followed by Shane Jenkins and Paul Tomkinson.

During the presentation of the BSX race plates the rain started up again, and then hail! It was brief but enough to give the track another good soaking. The sun came out again shortly afterwards and it was on to the eliminations.

Round 1

Open Men Michael Chasteauneuf Vs Josh Callan: These guys are normally fairly even on the track, but you would have to say that Callan has the edge at BSX, and he had the #1 plate and a win under his belt to prove it. The race was even until the first corner where Chasty misjudged it and ended up dropping his back wheel over the backside of the corner, it was all over for him.Kyle Horton Vs Shannon Rademaker: Horton had the lead but looked to slide a little in the third corner, allowing Rademaker to pull up next to him. Horton took the win only to fall shortly after the finish line.Luke Madill Vs Ethan Murray: Murray got the snap on Madill, but it didn’t take him long to get a strangle hold of the heat. Scott Lacey Vs Ziggy Callan: It was a fairly even start, Ziggy's experience on the track showing. Lacey started to pull ahead on the second straight but got loose into the second corner and nearly came unstuck, he got his feet back on his pedals but Ziggy was pulling up next to him. Lacey dropped it in the third corner allowing Ziggy to slip into the next round. The first time ever a woman had reached the second round at BSX. Lacey's campaign to follow up his 2009 win was over.Josh Isaac Vs Levi Collins: There's no doubt that Isaac has improved a lot over the past 18 months but it would take quite a ride for him to knock off one of the favourites. Collins looked to take the win until he nearly gave it away in the last corner, fortunately for him he pulled it together just in time.The rain had started to fall again, heavily, and the wind had picked up for possibly the worst conditions for this little red clay track but still the show went on.Ryan Henderson Vs Jordon Dole: It was a fairly even race in extremely poor conditions until Jordon Dole went over the top of the third corner and nearly took Henderson with him. Connor Hunter Vs Jake Tunney: Connor Hunter got off to a nice lead but found out early just how slippery the corners get in the wet. He regained composure and got himself back into the lead but lost traction, his back wheel slid out in the last corner and Hunter went down into the mud on his face. Tunney progressed to the next round.Hayden Fletcher Vs Jonathan Hoare: Hoare got off to an early lead and Fletcher slipped in the first corner, leaving Hoare to cruise to the next round.Tom Siinmaa Vs Cohen Gooden: Siinmaa had obviously been watching the early heats and was the first rider to drop the foot for the corners doin' it old school. He put in a good ride eliminating Gooden in the process.Bodi Turner Vs Talon Dobson: Turner got the snap and bounced out to a handy lead. He nearly came down in the second corner though and then again in the third. Dobson had pulled up just behind Turner coming out of the last corner but lost it on the second last jump and at the same time Turner got sideways going up the last jump. But Dobson was down and Turner managed to keep it upright somehow. In a great sign of what the day is all about, Turner walked over to Dobson to help him back up on his feet and over the line.Sam Ewing Vs James Lautier: Lautier got the snap but Ewing wasn’t going to give up, he went into the first corner with a little too much speed and went down. Lautier was cruising around the second corner and also dropped it. Then when it looked like he had it all sewn up and heading down the last straight he had dropped it again. Ewing was scrambling to catch up but crashed in the second last straight, Lautier jumped back on his bike and this time made it to the line.Scooby Guyers Vs Josh McLean: Scooby jumped out to the lead but then bobbled in the first corner, making up ground in the second straight he slid again in the second corner allowing McLean to get out to a handy lead. Guyers had given away too much ground and it was McLean who progressed.Matthew Juster Vs Wade Turner: Juster got out to a narrow lead, Turner stuck with him, but Juster was being very cautious and was lucky not to make a mistake because turner was waiting to pounce all the way to the finish.Adam Carey Vs Lachlan Kennedy: Carey looked to be playing it safe while Kennedy was putting it all on the line, it was working for him too until the third corner where he went in too low and was unable to turn hard enough without washing out.Declan Hepburn Vs David Lyon: Lyon was too quick for Hepburn and the two looked like they would get to the line unscathed until Hepburn dropped it in the last corner, but by then Lyon was gone.Luke Pretlove Vs Justin Beattie: These two were even exiting the first corner. Justin put the power down to get a good run for the second straight but all he managed to do was get the back wheel drifting and washed off all his speed. Pretlove kept it together to the line. 30 & Over

Simon Anderson Vs Simon Trewin: This is the third year in a row that these guys have met in the first round. Historically Trewin has gone down in a blaze of glory...and dust, much to the delight of his kids and those who like the crash scenes of the BSX DVDs. While Anderson got off to a good start Trewin stuck with him and by the third straight looked like he might also cause an upset with Anderson going for the four-pete. Anderson took the last corner perfectly and just edged out Trewin on the line.Craig Manual Vs Tony Harvey: Manual got the snap but Harvey put in some big cranks to put himself into the lead in the second straight. Manual dropped a pedal exiting the first corner but got it back together. Harvey was out in front when Manual dropped the bike in the second corner.Shane Jenkins Vs Craig Walczuk: Wally got the snap, but there wasn’t much in it. The two nearly clipped bars over the first double but somehow managed to stay upright. The two were neck and neck the whole way around the track. Entering the last corner it was anyone's race. It came right down to the wire. Wally had the momentum but started to drift towards Jenkins in between the last 2 jumps and had to jam on the anchors to avoid the collision. Jenkins narrowly made it through.Paul Knox Vs Paul Tomkinson: Tomkinson got the early lead which forced Knox to make too many mistakes and, in the end, he just couldn’t make up the ground.

Round 2 Open Men

Josh Callan Vs Tom Siinmaa: It was, even down the first straight, Siinmaa lost some speed sliding into the first corner, but kept it together. The race looked a little out of reach for Siinmaa, maybe 2 bike lengths but not impossible, down the last straight carrying more momentum he kept the pedal to the medal but dropped it when he lost traction going up the face of the second last jump. Callan also dropped a pedal but made it to the line.Kyle Horton Vs Bodi Turner: It was an even start, Turner tried to power wheelie out of the first corner but just seemed to spin his wheels. Horton cashed in and took the lead to the line. Luke Madill Vs James Lautier: Lautier got the snap, Madill had made up the ground by the first double and pulled away down the second straight leaving Lautier in his trail.The rain had started to fall again.Ziggy Callan Vs Josh McLean: Callan got the snap and kept it smooth taking the win and pushing herself into the top 8. The big question was, were we going to see a women in the Open Mens final? We had already seen that with Ziggy’s patience and skill that anything was possible.Levi Collins Vs Matthew Juster. Juster was riding well, but Collins seemed to have the edge, when the two exited the last corner racing was close and both riders slid out, Collins kept his speed up, Juster couldn’t regain his pedals. Heavy rain and strong wind kicked in again.Ryan Henderson Vs Adam Carey: Henderson spun his back wheel out of the gate and Carey jumped to a narrow lead. Both riders were struggling to stay upright, it wasn’t until they got to the last corner that they started to have some real trouble. Henderson went in with a slight lead and a little too much speed, his wheels started to give way but he managed to keep it together somehow. Carey was right on his tail, but it was Henderson who would progress to the next round.Jake Tunney Vs David Lyon: Lyon jumped to the early lead and rode a smooth lap with Tunney in tow, Tunney was about 3 bike lengths behind entering the last corner when he over cooked it and spun out.Jonathan Hoare Vs Luke Pretlove: Hoare was about a bike length in front by the end of the first straight. Pretlove just tried to keep it together and couldn’t make up any ground. Hoare went through to the top 8.

Quarter Finals Open Men Josh Callan Vs Levi Collins: It was fairly even down the first straight until something went wrong for Collins, he exited the track launching off the side of the second double and his race was over. Josh was through to the finals again.Kyle Horton Vs Ryan Henderson: Horton got off to a narrow lead but went into the first corner way too fast. The slippery surface claimed another victim and Henderson progressed.Luke Madill Vs David Lyon: Once again Madill was off to a slow start but started making up ground by the first jump. Madill Slipped in the first corner, lost a little speed, but kept it going. Coming up the second straight Madill was trying to get some pedals down but just kept spinning the wheels. He'd pulled up just behind Lyon by the half way point but still had some work to do. Lyon was coping well with the pressure and the conditions. It looked like Lyon had it all sewn up going into the last corner, and it could have been the upset of the event, if it wasn't for Lyon losing traction. He scootered to get going again and managed to pull it off but the second he got his foot back on his pedal he dropped the bike and handed Madill a get out of jail free card.Jonathan Hoare Vs Ziggy Callan: Ziggy was doing well keeping up with Hoare but she dabbed a foot in the second corner and washed off some speed. Half way around the last corner she lost the back end of the bike and fell. Her run was over, but she did extremely well given the field and the conditions. Hoare was through to his first BSX finals. It had started raining again for the semis.

Semis Open Men

Josh Callan Vs Luke Madill: Madill was on the right lane this time. Josh got the snap and Madill got a faster start than his earlier efforts. Going through the first corner it looked like this one would be close. Both these guys had won before and were keen to take another win. Luke was on the inside in the first corner and pulled around the corner well, but you could see when his wheel went from carpet to clay that he had no traction he tried to put some big cranks in but just kept spinning, Madill eventually lost balance, and shot off the side of the next jump. Callan went on to the A main, Luke to the B Main.Jonathan Hoare Vs Ryan Henderson: Hoare was in the left lane. The two were dead even down the first straight, Henderson seemed to have a good second straight but lost a bit of traction and speed going into the second corner. Dropping behind Henderson gave it all he had in the fourth straight only to slide nearly the whole way around the last corner, while he kept it upright Hoare took the win.

30 & Over

Simon Anderson Vs Shane Jenkins: Anderson, on the left lane, got off to a ripper of a start and had a length on Jenkins going into the first corner, Jenkins looked very cautious around the corners and just couldn't keep up with Anderson.Paul Tomkinson Vs Tony Harvey: Harvey on the left side. Tomkinson pulled a half a bike length on Harvey by the first jump but Harvey quickly made it up and the two were even by the halfway point. It looked like it could be a close call but as Tomkinson went into the last corner he slid and althrough he did a good job to keep it upright he lost all speed.

Finals

The rain had started again for the finals. Under 14 trophy dash. This is a new thing for BSX, since a bunch of young guns come and support the race we put the fastest two in a race together.

Ethan Murray Vs Jake Tunney: Murray on the outside. Murray got off to a quicker start and had a good bike length on Tunney going past the mid way point. But Murray slid out on the last corner and just couldn’t get the bike going again.

30 & Over B

Final - Shane Jenkins Vs Paul Tomkinson: Jenkins on the left side. A fairly even gate, Jenkins had a narrow lead down the first straight Tomkinson did the skid in the first corner and spun the wheels coming out of it. When he looked like he was about to get it together again, and with Jenkins pulling up next to him, he dropped it in the second corner.A Final - Simon Anderson Vs Tony Harvey: Anderson on the left side, got the snap, Harvey pulled up even at the end of the first straight. But in the second corner it all went wrong for Harvey, he couldn’t stop the bike from slipping around, which allowed Anderson to break away and take the win. Open Men

B Final - Ryan Henderson Vs Luke Madill: Madill on the right side got his best start of the day but Henderson still managed to out snap him. At the end of the first straight the two were neck and neck. Madill was spinning the wheels again out of the corners. It allowed Henderson to pull the lead by the half way marker. It was Henderson that spun the wheels out of the third corner and it looked like there was going to be a real race to the line, until Henderson slid out and eventually dropped the bike in the last corner, Madill took third overall.A Final - Josh Callan Vs Jonathan Hoare: It was a very even start. Callan was on the outside and looking to take advantage of the faster corner. At the midway point Callan looked like he had a half a length lead. Callan made a little slip in the third corner to give away any advantage he had. Both riders were a chance for the win going through the last corner, Callan was trying to pedal out but got the spins. Hoare was doing a good job of staying upright and keeping his speed up. Both riders hit the last jump at the same time, however Hoare took the high road boosting the jump while Callan thrusted his bike forward to take his second BSX crown.

BSX (Bicycle Supercross) is one-on-one sprint trails style racing on a backyard track built specifically to test a rider's skills. The short straights, lofty jumps and tight corners are very intense under race conditions but also fun for competitors and create quite a lot of entertainment for spectators. The event provides a unique experience for the local Victorian riders, as well as the interstate and international visitors during an off day of the Track Attack series. The events primary function is to raise money for the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation. In just four years the event has raised approximately $15,000 which has provided the hospital with new equipment. Funds have been raised through gate takings, raffles, auctions and donations. The Royal Children's Hospital Foundation plays a vital role in providing additional funding to support important research projects and purchase state of the art medical equipment to ensure that every child receives the very best treatment now and into the future.
