In the Womens ranks, USA's ALISE POST was the closest in qualifying to SX dominator Laetitia LeCorguille - the silver medalist from Beiking's Olympic Games. The French gal so far had won every single Supercross, and Post and her Flight bike were out to defend America's honor and put a stop to her streak. It would be a hefty task to do -- as Latetia continues to turn it up a notch come main time, and Alise found herself in the 3-spot coming out of turn 2, and fought hard to hold on to the podium spot. In the end, she was the highest placing American woman, and gave herself a big boost in UCi points rankings.
Although there's not much you can teach Alise when it comes to racing a BMX bike - we do admit that she could use some lessons on how to spray the Champagne during the podium celebration.
The 2010 Chula Vista Supercross will no doubt go down in BMX History as one of the Greatest BMX Races anyone has ever witnessed.
If the London Olympics can get an exciting main event such as that in 2012 - BMX will be all the talk of the Games.
FREJUS, FRANCE: The Final UCi SX of 2010 SAM WILLOUGHBY VOTED "RACER OF THE YEAR" FOR 2011 SX SERIES. The points chase was extremely tight between Redline's SAM WILLOUGHBY and the Gold Medal winning Machine from Latvia. Whoever placed better than the other would wind up with the UCi Overall title - and as the defending holder of that honor, "Sam I Am" was hoping to hold on to it for another year.
Frejus is like the InterBike show of France - with every bicycle manufacturer displaying their new 2011 products, and tons of riding competitions going on throughout the weekend.
Things started off EXTREMELY well for the Redline Global Team - as the top-3 in Time Trials were all REDLINE riders. France's JORIS DAUDET took the fastest time, with SAM WILLOUGHBY putting in the 2nd fastest lap, followed by Dutch~Redline's RAYMON van der BIEZEN. But unfortunately - things sort of broke down from there. To hold on to his UCi points lead, Sam first would have to make the main event - which in his quarter main, almost went up in smoke ... well, actually - it was more like dust, in the third turn. In the uncomfortable 4th place transfer spot, Sam was sprinting out of the final turn when USA's David Herman suddenly slip-slided away, and took down nearly everyone with him as if they were bowling pins. Sam slammed The Hermanator's bike, but luckily didn't seperate from his own Flight bike and was the quickest of the crash victims to get back up and cross the line. Squeekin' in for a 4th place in your quarter isn't quite where you want your head to be for the next two, highly-important races.
But even if your head was perfectly on straight with full focus toward the Championship, Redline will be the first to admit that it would've been hard to beat Maris Strombergs this weekend. Just like at the Worlds, Maris lived up to his "Machine" moniker. The dude truly looked unbeatable.
When the gate dropped for the main, Sam was right up front as usual - and much like Chula Vista, it was he, NZ's Marc Willers and Da' Machine up front battling 'bow to 'bow, for the lead position.
Entering the first turn at mach speeds, Maris came out with the lead, while Sam was ridden up a little high by his Aussie teammate Brian Kirkham. This took a little umph out of Sam's sails, and he fell all the way back to the 5th spot, but yanked on that invisible throttle for a lil' more speed to increase his momentum down the 2nd straight. Down the rhythm, Sam was able to get past Ramiro Marino and moved in to the 4th position. But by this point, the top-3 were long gone and there wasn't much Sam could do but pray for a Hermanator slide-out in the last turn. Disappointingly - he'd have to settle for a 4th in the Finals, and give up his title of Supercross Champion to the larger-than-life Latvian.
For the year, the One Man Wolfpack would wind up No.2 in UCi SX points for 2010. Still not shabby by any means! In WOMENS ELITE, Alise "The Beast"was again in the final - with her Dutch Redline teammate Joyce Seesing. After a gnarly crash in Time Trials, French Supercross specialist.
Laetitia LeCorguille was out with a broken rib - leaving the field wide open for anybody to win it. And without Shanaze Reade in the competition, NZ's Sarah Walker was the favorite, along with Redline Post and Columbia's jumping-bean Mariana Pajon. In the main event, Walker grabbed the holeshot, while Alise was right on her back knobbies until she bobbled a bit on the step-doubles going in to the first turn. Alise receovered quickly, but was forced to take an inside line and lost all of her momentum for the second straight. But she fought hard, and diced it out down the third staight with fellow American Arielle Martin, to hold on to the fourth place position.
Again - Alise was the highest placing American in the Womens division, and would wind up No.4 for the year in UCi standings. Those two points will play a heavy factor for USA Cycling when it comes time to chose their 2012 Olympic BMX team! One of the things all BMXers look forward to in Frejus is the end of the year UCi Awards celebration and after-party. Amongst the Awards up for grabs, was Rookie Pro of the Year - and Redline~Canada's TORY NYAHUG was amongst the five nominees. For "Most Stylish Rider" of the year - Dutch dude "EVIL" IVO van der PUTTEN took the honors; never one to miss an opportunity to whip it and dive-bomb tuck the backside of the burliest jump. ALISE POST was also up for top honors of "WOMAN RACER of the YEAR" - and SAM WILLOUGHBY was awarded "MALE RACER of the YEAR."
