The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) decided to grant the 2014 BMX World Championships to BMX Holland. The 2014 UCI BMX World Championships will be held on July 22-27 in Sportpaleis Ahoy, Rotterdam. “By granting this WC to the Netherlands another step is taken to professionalize this sport. The Dutch National Team has been ranked in top 10 positions for the last few years. Earlier UCI already assigned three BMX Supercross World Cups to the Netherlands, the story is completed by these 2014 World Championships. The goal is to make the most spectacular field in cycling more well known, therefore more popular and of a higher level”, says
Huib Kloosterhuis, director of the Dutch National Federation KNWU.
The candidacy for the World Championships was made possible by a close cooperation of KNWU, Rotterdam city of sports and BMX Holland and was supported by the Ministry of Sports and by the Dutch Olympic Committee.
Rotterdam alderwoman of sports
Antoinette van der Laan
reacted with great enthusiasm on the UCI decision:
“This is again a great event for the city of Rotterdam. BMX is a dynamic and young sport, which fits our city perfectly. Rotterdam will therefore use these World Championships to make youth acquainted to BMX, by organizing different activities and side events. After the World Championships of Judo (2009), Gymnastics (2010) and Table Tennis (2011) BMX is another Olympic sport, which suits the Dutch and Rotterdam Olympic ambitions towards the Olympic Plan 2028. Once again Rotterdam underlines her status as city of sports and we are proud of the national recognition of that fact.”
