The American riders fell victim to bad luck at the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup finals in Abbotsford, British Columbia over the weekend. In the elite men's race,
Barry Nobles (Menifee, Calif./DK Bicycles) and
Connor Fields (Henderson, Nev./Chase BMX) rebounded from a crash while charging down the first straight to finish fifth and sixth, respectively. Olympian
Twan van Gendt (NED) won the race with a time of 30.181, .612 ahead of world champion
Sam Willoughby (AUS) and 2.868 ahead of Olympian
Brian Kirkham (AUS).
In the elite women's race,
Felicia Stancil (Lake Villa, Ill./Factory GT) led the race with
Lauren Reynolds (AUS) in hot pursuit, but misfortune struck Stancil as she was exiting the third straight rhythm section just meters before the final turn, allowing the Olympic bronze medalist,
Laura Smulders (NED) to sneak across the finish line first. Stancil finished the race in seventh while
Crain placed eighth.
In Friday's time trials, elite men time trial world champion Fields and
Corben Sharrah (Tucson, Ariz./GT Bicycles) finished and were seeded fourth and fifth, respectively.
Fields registered a time of 30.606 while Sharrah posted a time of 31.114.
Willoughby was the fastest in the time trial with a time of 30.073.
In the women's time trials, junior women time trial World Champion Stancil's time of 34.073 was second-fastest to the elite women time trial World Champion Caroline Buchanan (AUS), who completed one lap in 33.667. Crain turned one lap sixth-fastest with a time of 35.523.
