Tom Lynch, a former UK and Euro BMX racing champion, has been awarded the MBE for services to BMXing and 'ambulance cycling'. Tom Lynch founded the Cycle Response Unit (CRU) of the London Ambulance Service in 2000, the first such unit in the UK. A trial had found that medics on bikes almost always got to urban emergency scenes before normal ambulances. In a third of calls, the bicycle ambulance technician was able to cancel a full ambulance response, freeing up precious resources.
Congrats to Tom from everyone at FATBMX. Here's a photo of Tom Lynch on his first BMX bike from 1981. Stuntman first, medic now.
