The UCI BMX Supercross World Cup is about to kick off the 2013 season in Manchester, UK. This year marks the 10 year anniversary of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup Series. BMX Supercross revitalized BMX racing with its exciting and spectacular races for Elite riders. The sport has come a long way in 10 years, with it’s first Olympic aperance in Beijing 2008 and the succesful 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Continuous growth As another proof of the continuous growth and interest, the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup will make a first apperance in the Manchester Cycling Centre, the only permanent BMX Supercross indoor facility in the world. The £27 million purpose build venue does not only serve as a training facility for Team GB and the BMX squad, but has also revitalized the BMX interest in Manchester, UK by hosting development sessions of all different levels.
Strong field expected A strong field with over 200 athletes from 26 countries is expected in Manchester, but there is no doubt that the ones to beat are #65 Liam Phillips (GBR) and #12 Shanaze Reade (GBR). They have logged countless laps on their home track and they must have the track dialed in!
In Elite Men, Sam Willoughby (AUS) is looking to continue his winning ways from 2012 that landed him the overall BMX Supercross World Cup tittle, the World Championship and a silver medal at the 2012 Olympic Games. Willoughby will be running his #1 on a red number plate, indicating that he is defending his 2012 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup.
In the women’s category, Alise Post (USA) showed great pre-season form and will certainly look to challenge home-town favourite Reade. But so will Laura Smulders (NED), winner of the last 2012 World Cup and Supercross specialist Magalie Pottier (FRA)the current World Champion.
