What a week in Australia… It was such a great feeling being back on the supercross 8m start hill again for the first time since the Olympic Games. Leading into the event it was nice to catch up with old friends on the Gold Coast and people that I haven't seen since before the Games. The Nationals week started off with myself and some of the pros helping out with the under eight year olds "Sprocket" coaching clinic which was a great success. A new edition to racing in Australia is the "Mini Wheelers" which are the under five year olds category. There was even one little fella out there still in nappies who was almost two years
old and made it the whole way around the track on his strider bike. I absolutely loved helping all the kids out and seeing the smiles on their faces. The future of the sport is definitely looking bright with the amount of interest and talent coming through.
The Oceania Continental Championships where held on thursday which also double up as the last round of the Australian BMX National series. Womens racing in Australia at the moment is definitely not lacking quality however it is lacking in quantity. The numbers in the women's elite and junior elite categories was quite a shame and meant that we would not run a normal three heat and final format. Instead it was a three heat format with the points accumulated determining the overall result for the day (lowest points wins) I won the Oceania Continental Championship Title ahead of Melinda McLeod and Lauren Reynolds.
During the week I teamed up with BMX Australia and my headphone sponsor Monster Headphones for a social media event give away. It was called the #SpySnapGiveaway and ran across the three social media channels Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. People had to snap and post there best spy snap of myself rocking my headphones to be in the chance to win 2 sets of headphones. The competition turned out to be a huge success and there will be plenty more to come.
The National Championships where held on saturday and for the elite women we ran the same three heat format. Sitting on low points during the second heat I was leading when one minute I was jumping fine and the next minute I felt Lauren Reynolds hit me from behind taking us both out and out of contention for the title. Melinda McLeod dodged the crash and went on to take the win in that heat and gain a clear lead in points. Lauren Reynolds and myself quite sore from the crash still we both decide to race the last heat. I knew coming into the last heat that all I could do was control what was in my control and go out and win. I won the last heat with Lauren in second and Melinda in third who ended up taking the Australia National Title. It was a little disappointing way for the day to play out but that is racing and why we all love it because it is so unpredictable.
Next stop North Carolina this weekend for a USA BMX National round.
