The first race of the Open Dutch MX Championships took place in Gemert. A lot of work was done to the track to make the event happen. It had snowed a lot and the below zero temperatures of the past week turned the track into a hard-pack track instead of a loose sand circuit. It was weird, it looked more like a superretard race than an MX race but the conditions were the same for everyone.
Rob van Vijfeijken got the holeshot in moto 1 of the MX2. His dad had helped getting the track in shape and Rob must checked out every inch
of the track as well. He held on to the lead for a few laps until Factory Kawasaki's
Stephen Sword passed him.
Marc de Reuver had to start from the second row as he forgot to bring his time transponder. It had to be picked up in Belgium. Marc made his way to 2nd place but made a little mistake and had South African
Wyatt Avis, Rob and German
Max Nagl pass him.
Moto 2 of the MX2 was won by
Tyla Rattray, who did not impress in moto one (9th). The KTM Champ rider profited from a little mistake by the #15 of Sword who fell back a few spots after he was leading most of the race. De Reuver was already out at this time. He tried to slow down for a crash rider but the slippery conditions didn't help. He ran into the rider and got his foot in the running wheel and messed up his knee. He might be out for a while (again). Jumbo
Jan van Hastenberg got third.
MX!. Factory KTM rider
Sven Breugelmans (Belgium) got the holeshot with
Erwin Robins in hot pursuit. An amazing start for the Butcher from Hellmond but unfortunately his 2nd place didn't last long because he burnt his clutch. Kawa pro rider
Tanel Leok came through the pack and rode to the 2nd place spot. It was too much to catch Breugelmans on this fast track.
Moto 2 of the MX1 saw a yellow Suzuki with the number 4 take the holeshot. No, it wasn't
Ricky Carmichael but
Danny Theybers who blew up his RM450F half a track later. Leok again moved into the 2nd place spot with his 2-stroke KX followed by 2004 Dutch MX1 champion
Bas Verhoeven. Antti Pyrhonen made the trip from Italy to participate and never took off his jacket. I thought a man from Finland could handle a bit of Dutch winter weather.
That wraps up round #1 of the Dutch Open MX Championships.
