The UCI BMX Supercross World Cup series heads to Santiago del Estero, Argentina this weekend September 6-7, for the fourth and penultimate round, as competitors vie for both the series title, and Olympic qualification points. Caroline Buchanan the 2012 series champion has won two of the three World Cup events so far this year, with victories in Manchester and Berlin placing her atop the series standings.
Victory in Argentina could see
Buchanan the Canberra local, build an unassailable lead ahead of the final round in Chula Vista, USA at the end of September. Whilst she admitted feeling confident off the back of her recent success, she was slightly cautious given the nature of the sport.
“I am feeling quite confident going into this event off the back of winning the last World Cup in Berlin, and getting a sliver medal in the World Championships Time Trial,” she said
“However BMX is always unpredictable.”
Asked how she felt about racing in Argentina, Buchanan recalled that it had been quite a while since she had last visited the country, and that racing wasn’t the only priority this time around.
“Last time I was in Argentina I was nine years old racing the World Championships in 1999, so it’s great to be back,” she said.
“I’ll also be visiting a children’s hospital and orphanage as part of my Buchanan ‘On Air’ series video. I’ll be giving the kids a DK bike and some jerseys.”
Fellow Australia riders
Melinda McLeod and
Lauren Reynolds will join
Buchanan in Argentina this weekend, with McLeod currently tenth in the Supercross series, while Reynolds is 23rd.
The Australian men’s charge at glory this weekend will be spearhead by
Anthony Dean who currently sits in third in a tightly contested series leader board. A solid performance could vault him into the lead over
Liam Phillips of Great Britain. Fellow Aussie
Bodi Turner will also compete alongside Dean, and currently sits 28th in the series.
