Australia’s queen of BMX Caroline Buchanan, is just one solid performance away from securing her second UCI BMX Supercross World Cup series in three years as the final event of the season gets underway in Chula Vista, USA this weekend. Buchanan has been in breathtaking form at times this series, racking up wins in Manchester and Berlin from four events to build an almost unassailable lead over her nearest rivals. However whilst her lead is substantial Buchanan refuses to rest on her laurels, leaving no stone unturned in her quest for success.
“Like any other event I always maximise every opportunity I have to be to ready and successful,” she said.
“I have had an amazing season but no ride to the top is ever easy. I’ve had some ups and downs and challenges over the course of the world cup season. However with the series leader red plate and one stop to go on a track that I love, I am excited to get out there and perform.” The Olympic standard track situated at the USA Olympic Training Centre is modelled off the one used at the 2012 London Olympic Games and promises to provide two days of dazzling racing to cap off a memorable international BMX season. A points re-scheduling has also made this year’s world cup series harder to win, and according to Buchanan more rewarding.
“This world cup series win would be so much more rewarding for me compared to 2012,” Buchanan said.
“The time trial points don’t count so it’s all about head to head racing and battling to the finish line. The level of women’s racing has progressed so much, each round there has been a solid top five girls all battling out for the podium positions and points lead.” The Australian men’s charge at glory this weekend will be spearhead by
Anthony Dean who currently sits in second in the World Cup series behind
Liam Phillips of Great Britain. Fellow South Australian S
am Willoughby will join Dean on the start ramp, with the reigning world champion adding extra spice to an already absorbing race line up. The good mates have both been training in the US in the lead up to this weekend’s event, which Dean admits has him feeling primed and raring to go.
“My preparation has been great, I’ve had some good track time on the race course, I’m feeling confident on the bike and I look forward to this great event,” Dean said.
Although
Phillips’ lead is a substantial one,
Dean isn’t conceding the title to the Brit just yet, ensuring the weekend’s racing could go down to the wire.
“To win the overall world cup series would be a huge honour for me,” Dean said.
“It's something we all dream of as riders and to be in contention for the title is a great achievement in itself. All my attention and energy is focused on Saturday, and I’m ready to race." Other Australian’s in action over the weekend include
Kirsten Dellar, Rachel Jones, Melinda McLeod and
Lauren Reynolds who will compete in the elite women, while Bodi Turner, Max Cairns, David Habicht, Jeremy McLerie and Aaron Nottle will all compete in the elite men.
